Soulmate Marks were personal, they were the most personal thing that a person could have. They were the connection to your other half, the thing that linked you so completely to someone in a way that was magical and unexplainable and they were supposed to be yours and your Soulmates and no one else’s.
When Buck's Soulmate Mark is leaked to the world, ruining his plans of meeting his Soulmate organically, he has no idea that fate has him covered.
Meanwhile, Eddie has never watched an episode of Serendipity, but starting the show involves becoming a fan of one Evan Buckley and finding out that the Soulmate he wasn't looking for is a famous actor responsible for his new favorite show.

“I'm gay.”
He's looking at his feet, because he hasn't quite come to terms with the fact that he's saying this in a room where other people, strangers, can hear it.
But this is still the first time he's said it this way: out loud, in a declarative sentence. Being nervous is fine. Frank said that being nervous is fine, and Buck just said he's proud, and the only thought Eddie has in his head is that it's embarrassing he can't raise his head and say it like a man, so clearly, he's going to need to hang on to other people's words for the time being, someone who isn't his dad trying to explain the ways Eddie's allowed to inhabit the world.
He doesn't need to ask anyone's permission to be who he is. That's also a thing Frank said.
in which eddie attends a self-empowerment group for gbtq men to supplement his therapy, and is empowered to: forgive himself, say "i'm gay" to his own reflection in the mirror, accidentally adopt an adult, make fried rice, and tell his straight best friend that he's in love with him. not necessarily in that order.

Romance is a lot easier to write about than it is to put into practice, and Eddie is the world’s most ridiculous living example of that. He can practically hear the kind of jokes that Shannon would make about it, if he ever told her about the books but - he didn’t. And somehow, probably just because he didn’t start writing until after they weren’t living together anymore, she never found out.
There’s actually only a handful of people in the world who know that Eddie is a writer - and more specifically, that he’s E. Diaz, one of the bestselling romance authors on the market.
or - the one where everything in canon is the same, except eddie diaz is secretly a bestselling romance author, and nobody knows. Yet.

Missing Chris is less of an emotion these days and more of a physical entity. He’s sure everyone can see that he’s slowly hollowing himself out, that he can’t do much of anything else.
But when Jee laughs at him trying to get his tongue to touch his nose, and Mara loops one of her arms through his to keep him from tossing the rest of his cup in the garbage, Eddie feels solid again.
Maybe he likes yellow birthday cake ice cream after all.
(or, gerrard messes with the team's schedules and eddie 'i just drove my son to flee the state' diaz is the only option to watch mara and jee-yun after school on tuesdays, which, shouldn't be a problem at all, right?)

“I am literally popping corn,” Buck says, “What more do you…” he trails off as he finally looks up and sees the man by the entrance that Taylor was eyeing. “Holy shit.”
In which Buck crushes on the hot firefighter dad that comes in for the $5 movie nights, and then they fall in love about it.

Summary
The thing was, the 118 was full of gossips.
Eddie had been at the station less than a week before Hen and Chim wrangled details about his “hot young thing” from him (“Buck is only 4 years younger than me, he is not a ‘hot young thing’!” Eddie complained.)
And Bobby was open about his worries for his son’s lack of direction and the secrets he appears to be keeping (“I just wish I could help Evan find the thing that gives him purpose,” Bobby lamented.)
It just made it all the more ridiculous (and horrifying) when Eddie realizes he’s been dating his Captain’s son this whole time (“Defiling his baby,” Chimney cackled, because he clearly wanted Eddie murdered.)
--
Or, the AU where miscommunication abounds as Eddie seeks advice about his new relationship, Bobby despairs over his adopted son's career prospects and his refusal to talk about it, and Evan Buckley-Nash juggles training at the fire academy, building a family with his new boyfriend, and trying to work out how to tell his overprotective dad that he's already chosen the life he wants, actually.
It takes a goddamn tsunami, of all things, to get the story straight.Series

“You okay?” Buck asks, and Eddie blinks, lets out the breath that had gotten caught in his throat.
“Yeah,” he says, even though – no, not really. “Sorry, just – a surprise, I guess. Hearing from him.”
Which is weird, come to think of it, because they used to be close. Closer than anything, as close as – well, as close as him and Buck, but in a different way. In a way that felt frantic and clinging and desperate, something to hold onto while they were being shot at.
Eddie hears from an old army buddy; it brings a few things to the surface.

Summary
When he was sixteen years old, Eddie heard his soulmate's voice in his head for the first time. How could someone be so sweet, and so sad at the same time? He vowed that he would always try to make them happy, and feel wanted. He just didn't know how many bumps there would be along the road.
Buck always knew that he would find his soulmate, and relished every word they said to him. It felt like they were the only person in the world to truly care about him, besides Maddie. Every high and every low would be worth it. He really hoped so, anyway.

Summary
"No, Eddie. You don't understand. I should've known. I should've known who you are to me. I'm so sorry I ever forgot, but I know now. You, you're Eddie Diaz, firefighter with the 118, my partner, my best friend, my boyfriend."
Buck is expecting Eddie to embrace him, to burst out into a big smile, to maybe even kiss him again. What he is most definitely not prepared for, however, is the silence that follows, nor the absolutely stunned look on Eddie’s face.
“E-eddie? You—,” he says.
This doesn't feel good, Buck thinks. Not at all.
“Buck—,”
“You're my boyfriend…? Right? Y-you are?” Buck asks.
Eddie replies after what feels like an eternity. “Buck, I'm— I'm not your boyfriend. Why— why do you—"
Buck thinks that this might be worse than falling to his death.
Or: Buck gets temporary amnesia after a call gone bad.
