Crowley took a step back, exhaling. “Oh yeah. You’ve never fallen in a pool of boiling sulfur, have you?” He asked, keeping his voice quiet. He didn’t wait for an answer, though. “It’s worse than you can ever imagine.”
Aziraphale's face tightened with pain, and his voice softened. “Oh, Crowley…”
“No, no. That’s physical pain —it stops when you get out,” he whispered, taking a few more steps back. His voice grew even quieter as he continued, “But you leaving? Ten times, at least, worse than any kind of physical pain.” Turning around, Crowley kicked at the foot of his throne, his voice rising. “And it never stops!”

The serpent left the castle with a wide smile. He was bouncing across the meadows with sparkling happiness radiating within him. He had never felt so happy and full of energy. He thought about telling Aziraphale how much he loved his company, his friendship. How special he was to Crowley, that he had not known anyone else like him before and he did not think he will ever again. He did not want to waste his time with anyone else now, not even with Lucifer. He was going to catch up with them to tell Lucifer he was not going to be involved in these meetings anymore and go back to where his dear Aziraphale was. Home.

“All right! 1923! London, Earth. Ever been to Soho, Captain?” The Doctor is already on his way to fetch his coat before the TARDIS has finished materializing. “I’ve landed us just in time to enjoy the post-war prosperity while it’s still around. Made that mistake once already—trust me, it’ll be awfully gloomy around here in a couple of years. But the Jazz Age, now that’s brilliant!”
He turns around as he reaches the ship’s double doors, pausing when he realizes Jack has not budged from the console. More worryingly, his expression is smug and self-satisfied, the way it always is when the Doctor makes a stupid, oftentimes completely avoidable mistake.
“1923, huh?” says Harkness. “Are you sure?”
As it turns out, he was a century off when punching in the coordinates, no doubt a result of the showboating he’d been doing earlier (an act he tends to slip into when in Jack’s presence, though it’s even worse when Rose is also on board). They are in reality a century late to the Jazz Age, and the year is actually 2023.
London, Soho, though. At least he’s got the location right. That must count for something.

On the first day of kindergarten, 1986, Aziraphale Fell met Anthony Crowley, and the two were best friends from that moment on. What began as a simple childhood friendship grew and developed into something deeper and more precious, and they swore a sacred vow as children to always be best friends. Knowing one another as well as they did, they formed another pact in their teens: if they were both single at forty, they'd marry each other.
They went to separate universities and grew apart over the years, but neither ever forgot the other. And a few weeks before Aziraphale's fortieth birthday, he is shocked when Crowley appears in his shop, having returned to London for good.
