"I don't want to go," Aemma said, her trembling lips showing a deep distress that nearly swayed Elys to take her to Gulltown. She would enjoy the seaside, Elys thought. And it was still spring; when autumn arrived and Aemma turned sixteen, perhaps Elys would allow her to come to the court.
But who was Elys to dictate that? She had no control over Aemma's life. She wouldn’t have better life in Gulltown. But in King’s Landing Prince Viserys and Prince Daemon were yet betrothed—either one would make a suitable bridegroom for her half-sister. Aemma was a Targaryen as much as she was an Arryn. Elys had made sure of it.
"Your queen grandmother has summoned you, Aemma. It is a royal command."
Aemma lowered her gaze, fidgeting with her ring again. "But I'll be alone." When their eyes met, Aemma's shimmered with unshed tears. "Can't I come with you? Here, Kyla has baby Jeyne, but you only have sons."

The thought made him frown.
No, that couldn’t be right. Harry disliked imagining his mother as anything like Aunt Petunia—shrill, horse-faced, and obsessed with cleanliness. Aunt Petunia’s kitchen had always smelled faintly of disinfectant. Everything in it had been kept in its proper place. Tea towels hung in perfect lines. Plates were stacked with their edges aligned. If crumbs appeared on the counter, Aunt Petunia seemed to take it as a personal insult.
Lily, in Harry’s mind, was better than that. Kinder. Warmer.
Maybe she would have tolerated a little mess. Maybe there would have been flour left on the counter after baking, or mugs abandoned where they cooled, forgotten. Maybe her kitchen would have looked lived in, like the one in the Burrow.
That was the thing about not knowing. His mother existed as a shape rather than a person. A woman who had stood between him and death, and vanished before he could form a single memory of her. He could imagine love bright enough to stop a Killing Curse. He could not imagine whether she had sighed when she found muddy footprints on a floor.

"Hina," Naruto said anxiously, almost a whisper. The wrinkles on his forehead made him look older than usual. "Hina, I'm sorry I didn't inform you. But this is an emergency, and the boy needs closer supervision. Katasuke's facility is no place to confine a child who has been through so much. He needs normal things—having dinner together, a friend, things like that, so he doesn't get so angry because of loneliness. You know how painful those things were for me when I was a child. Hina, Hina, I can't let that happen to another child I can save." His tone was tense and almost desperate, and for a moment, Hinata felt like a child again, gazing at Naruto alone on the Academy swing.
"I understand, Naruto-kun," Hinata said, squeezing his hands. "Regardless, we will discuss it later in the evening, hmm?" After the children were asleep. Any husband and wife disputes should be kept within the four walls of their bedroom, Hinata had been taught. "Now, bring the boy inside. Surely, you two can use some tea to calm your minds."
(Twenty-seven days after their fifteenth wedding anniversary, Hinata’s husband brought home a stray kid with sharp, bony elbows for her to raise.)
