Summary
The Hanahaki disease is an illness born from one-sided love in which the victim coughs up flowers or flower petals as a reaction to his or her infatuation. The only cure is to have that love reciprocated or to somehow wipe away all one’s feelings for their beloved person. The infection can also be removed through surgery, but along with the petals, any and all memories associated with that person disappear.
The Hanahaki disease is NOT harmless. The victim can die from it; the growing flowers will eventually clog up his or her respiratory system and windpipe leading to eventual death due to lack of air. Love does kill indeed—one-sided love.
I already knew that I’m in love with Simon Snow. I already knew that one day it would kill me. I just didn’t think it would be like this.
--When Baz starts throwing up flower petals, he has to confront his feelings for Simon Snow.

Simon's flat is very depressing.
There's nothing here. Besides the chocolate bar wrappers in the sofa cushions and mess of clothes on the floor, there’s no hint of Simon residing here full time. He doesn't have art on the walls, or trinkets on his bookshelves. He doesn't even have a bookshelf. There's barely any furniture, except for what we bought at our only IKEA trip, and the bed frame Penny found at a flea market.
It doesn't take a lot of persuading for Simon to come shop at TK Maxx with me. We go everywhere together these days, and we’re trying to build a life together in his little one-bedroom flat.

Summary

While slinging scoops, he gets to know his co-worker Simon Snow-- a boy sweeter than all the ice cream in the shop-- and starts falling for him. But Baz's father refuses to acknowledge his son is gay, and Simon's low self-esteem refuses to believe Baz would ever love someone like him.

Virgil didn't answer. He felt like he should be; all the original happiness he had derived from the idea of rain came from not having to deal with it and instead being inside, warm and safe, simply existing without having to explain himself to the universe.
He wasn't upset, though. Though now he stood outside, he was feeling the exact same as he had sitting on the kitchen counter. He realized the sleepy warm happiness Patton brought to his life was the exact same feeling as the safety of being indoors during a storm.
