Akaza watches the flex of toned muscle, the bend of his shoulder as it meets his neck, sinew and sun-touched skin. There is the faint silver gleam of an old scar. All of a sudden, the hunger that had lain dormant has arisen to the forefront of Akaza’s mind, and all he can focus on is the beat of Kyojuro’s heart that he can hear in the too-silent inn room, the way he can almost feel Kyojuro’s blood pumping through his veins. Summary

And yet compared to the ancient rhythm of the seasons, compared to the ever-watchful eyes of the moon, was a demon’s life really that much longer than a human’s in the grand scheme of the universe? Kyojuro looks at Akaza’s searching eyes and wonders if he truly grasps the idea of eternity. Then he wonders if that is why Akaza has asked him, and all of the Hashira before Kyojuro: Fight me for eternity. Not because of their strength, not even to truly fight. A plea, to make the promise of eternity less lonely.
