Summary
Simon stands at the end of the hallway. It’s just as colorless as it had been over seven years ago, and people still dart through it and around each other like fish. It’s his third first day, each terrifying in its own way, and somehow, he feels more out of place than when he was one of the youngest in the room or when he was a convicted killer.
“Different, isn’t it?” Klavier Gavin asks, and it takes all the years of molding himself into someone new for Simon to hide the spike of surprise and fear that shoots through him.

It's raining.
Usually, that wouldn’t keep Kris from going about their business like normal. Their clothes getting a little wet wasn’t the end of the world, because they could always let them dry on their person or hang them up in the bathroom to air dry.
But they couldn’t let their church clothes get wet. This was the first time they had been to a service in a long while, so they wanted to look nice. Not for themself, but for their mom. It elated her to hear Kris agree to go with her earlier this morning, on the condition they go on their own, which she had cheerfully allowed.

Kris gets stuck in the rain on their way to church and at first, it seems like they're going to be sheltering themself for who knows how long. That is, of course, until they get a little help from a surprisingly reliable friend.

Not wanting to drag down Klavier’s high spirits, he's left with two choices: keep his boyfriend detached from his personal life, or drag Klavier into confronting ghosts of his past that he’s spent fifteen years trying to forget.
And, well, Apollo’s never been so good at the ghost confronting stuff, so emotional isolation it is. At least, it would be, if Klavier wasn’t so insistent on dumb romantic things like teamwork and basic communication.

Summary
Klavier Gavin had lost a lot of people in the courtroom.
He'd become painfully desensitized to the sight of a loved one in the defendant's chair or behind the witness stand. He's used to being dragged into the center of cases he really shouldn't have anything to do with. He's had his heart broken more than once while standing behind the prosecutor's bench. His life, it seems, is inexplicably intertwined with the justice system, and it has taken so very much away from him.
He never expected it to give anything back.
Basically, an AA5 rewrite where Klavier stuck around after Turnabout Academy, built newer, healthier relationships, and unpacked some of his traumas.
Broadly, a story about platonic love, romantic love, and self love.
Title adapted from Margaret Atwood's poem "Variation on the Word Sleep".

Klavier’s first memory of blood went a little like this: the turkey at the family dinner, the worn handle of the knife, and Kristoph’s brown hands.
In retrospect, it was those details that stuck out at him above all else—the family dinner, because it was the first and last of its kind, the worn handle of the knife because it made him think of how it looked like it was made for the grooves of Kristoph’s hands, and Kristoph’s hands because they moved in a way that made him think he was born for the kitchen, not the courtroom.
(Of course, as a child, it had slipped his mind that knives weren’t just used for cooking.)
