Hornet sat on her knees, her claws braced there. Lace had draped herself against Hornet's back. Where Lace's arms slipped under Hornet's cloak to wrap around her middle, she felt the familiar fine threads of that shell, winding in layers and layers, into the incomparable artifice that lay against Hornet's jointed carapace.
A stray thought, itself familiar: for how long? What may happen, that you will come to forget?

It matters not to Lace, who has turned her back. Steps light as a floating feather, she careens to the other side of the room—hands on her hips, she examines their tidy bed. She plucks a limp pillow off the comforter.
“Bug or not,” she calls over her shoulder, “I am most helpful.”

The rising and falling of her chest, the only thing Hornet’s promised. Lace’s eyelashes flutter amidst a distant dream. Her hair is feathered across the pillow in airy wisps.
Her hair. Hornet lies awake because of Lace’s hair.

For constructs made entirely of Silk, utmost care must be taken during their creation to prevent unintended quirks in the body's nervous system. Major modifications to the construct's sensory nerves can cause unintended side effects, such as the Silk underneath the outer layer of the construct's shell gaining extreme sensitivity to touch.
Grand Mother Silk never gets the memo, leaving Lace to learn this the hard way.
