Summary
"The surveyor’s fist connected with my jaw, hard. I don’t blame her. Her breathing was ragged as I clawed at her back, simultaneously trying to pull her closer and push her away [...] We were trapped here in this violent limbo, trying to kill each other while struggling to stay alive."
The scene where the biologist returns to camp went a little differently than it was told.

Summary
Kay loved those hands, and everything they did for him (and to him). Pale and unmarred and still soft after years of work at the inn, they spoke to Gareth’s shifting moods far more than his words ever did.
Gareth plays with Kay's hair; Kay appreciates it.

Arthur played around with the jukebox, and a moment later a simple, jaunty reel filled the room. A mixture of fiddle, pipes, and guitar echoed through the rafters, and Kay's feet started flying. Gareth stared in awe.

Summary
“Your nightmares, since…?” Kay trails off, still not quite able to put words to his ordeal the previous winter.
“Not all the time, no,” Gawain shakes his head. “It comes with the weather, I suppose.” He glances at Kay. Takes another swig of wine. Fiddles with a lonely pawn on the board. “We thought you were dead.”In which Kay and Gawain drink far too much wine, and one thing leads to another

"Fear not," the Beast says, and its voice is beginning to sound less like his own, and more like many voices woven into one. "I am not the horror you seek. I am only a messenger."
