He had spent lifetimes trying to forget what this felt like, this particular brand of hope. It was blinding, all-consuming, exciting, dangerous. It made him confront things he wished would stay buried, made him latch onto foolish ideas— scenarios where Havers returned to Button House through some contrived means.
