"i'm seeing someone." she blurts it out without thinking it through, the words off her tongue before she can catch them, and then she can't take them back. they hang in the balance between them and she watches the way his face changes, his jaw setting stubbornly, a flicker in his eyes full of determination not to let her see right through them. it emboldens her, tells her that maybe lying is the best thing to do.
or, holly asks marvyn for a favour, and things get a little out of hand.

she takes the shot. as the ball sails through the air, they hold a collective breath. it hits the rim, teeters there for the barest of indecisive moments, and then falls away. it bounces once, twice, three times; holly moves mindlessly to catch the ball, to stop it before the next time it makes contact with the floor. when she turns to look at him, marvyn's eyes are closed, and something in her heart seems to twist at the sight. "okay," he says, in the end. it feels as if it's been an eternity. the distance between them stretches out forever.
or, five times holly misses the shot, and one time she doesn't.

it's less of an official announcement and more a case of simply using her eyes, because emma would have to be blind not to see the way that her dad and holly look at each other. they’re not exactly subtle. holly looks at him like he’s the sun and he looks at her like she’s the stars, and it would be a little sickening if emma didn’t think it was actually sort of adorable.
or, emma comes to terms with her dad's relationship with holly; the girls make a bet.

she doesn't know exactly when it crept up on her. she’s been ignoring it because it’s not practical, and if there’s one thing she learned from the slow crumble of her marriage, it’s that she could use a little practicality. and he’s infuriating, that’s what he is – not-so-subtle asides about dishwashers and hvac filters because he just can’t stand to ask for help without a dig or eight – and still, there are feelings there that she hasn’t let herself define. feelings that she doesn’t want to talk about, because that’s not the smart shot to take.
or, holly's relationship with marvyn and decisions gets complicated, and i have way too many thoughts about it.

she isn't sure what she expects him to say. everything is always a little up in the air with him, a little unpredictable, a little unsteady. is that the thing that made them work, or the thing that didn't? he puts his hands in his pockets and looks her right in the eye and says, "i’m not over you, and i was kind of hoping maybe you weren’t over me, either." lou is swept back to a sunlit field where she said that to him, once, in exactly those words, and her heart pounds. i'm not. i'm not over you. i'm so not over you that sometimes it feels like i can't breathe.
or, that night by the pond isn't the last time that lou sees mitch, and i take some serious liberties in terms of timeline, wardrobe choices, and behind the scenes pictures.

she finds the bracelet laid out over dark velvet in a glass case, next to a dozen almost exactly like it, but this one is special. there’s something about it that draws her in. hope van dyne is, truthfully, not particularly big on jewelry, not outside of the necklace she wears every day. but when she steps back out onto the sidewalk, it’s with the fine golden chain carefully boxed up in the deep pocket of her coat.

tilting his head back, he looks up to the stars, standing out bright and white in the dark, far more noticeable than they were before thanos. the city emits less light than it used to; this is one of the many different things that he noticed when he came back. it’s not just san francisco – it’s all the cities he drove through on the way across the country, maybe all the cities anywhere. it’s like the lights dimmed all over the world when they lost half of the population. he wonders how long it will take to return to normal, now that the vanished people have returned.
or, adjusting to the world after the snap when you've been through this much trauma is hard. and scott lang can't sleep.

she cuts him off again, turning to step directly in front of him so he has to stop talking and walking all at once. “i don’t want to talk about germany,” she says, holding his gaze carefully, meaningfully. maybe it’s selfish, but if they talk about germany, she’ll be angry with him, and she’s tired of being angry. he looks rather as if he wants to push; she can see it in his eyes, in the set of his jaw. but he gets the hint, nods, kisses her. like maybe he’s wanted to do it for a long time, because maybe they will just always have that quality to them – lost time and too many firsts.
or, a study of several important milestones in scott and hope's relationship. in which hope has never been that great at timing.

hope struggles, usually, with how to express her feelings. she's not good at the romantic, flowery language that makes up poetry and music. scott goes for simple and it comes across precious and cute, accompanied by a crooked little smile and twinkling eyes, and it makes her heart swell in her chest. but when hope goes for simple, it comes out... wrong. too harsh, sharp edges and corners. simple, yes – but vaguely emotionless, as if she feels detached. which she doesn't. she's felt detached from things for long enough to recognize when she's not.
or, hope navigates her relationship with scott over time.

scott seems like a good choice for the job, and everything is going just fine. the obvious dislike simmering between the recruit and his daughter isn't ideal – just because the sassy comments and eye rolls and, well, face punches, they get in the way of their productivity – but eventually, hope and scott begin to find some common ground. gradually. like testing out ice before they step. early on, hank thinks that’s all there is to it: two people who distinctly do not like each other, painstakingly learning how to work together as a team. later, he thinks maybe he was sort of blind.

on this fifth tuesday, when she has officially been coming here for over a month, there is a new guy at the snack table when hope walks into the room. her immediate feeling is one of relief, because it means she's no longer the newest addition to the group, but it turns out once they've all taken their seats that he's only a temporary visitor. "i'm scott," he introduces himself when jimmy turns his attention to him. ("hi, scott," mumbles the room in acknowledgement.)

a low buzz of panic settles into tammy’s veins. there is something sitting, hidden, at debbie’s house down the street that is for her, and that means that she has under two weeks to find the perfect gift to give in return. it’s not nearly enough time and, really, she should have brought this up earlier, only she didn’t necessarily expect debbie ocean to be a valentine’s day gift sort of girl.
or, debbie and tammy tackle their first valentine's day as a couple. even if they are still in the early stages of their relationship and definitely have not said a particular word to each other yet.

"your tactic to impress a woman is putting up christmas lights?"
or, debbie has never really been good at talking about her feelings. least of all when it comes to a time as crucial as the holidays.

when they return to their street, the home stretch with tired feet and bags full of candy, the light is still on. tammy is pretty sure nobody has gone up to the door at all, and as derek adjusts his grip on his bag of candy, he informs them all that the woman who lives there is a witch who will curse them if they get too close. “is that so?” muses tammy. “i think even a witch might make an exception tonight. it’s halloween, after all. that’s a witch’s favourite night of the year. it’s the end of the night, anyway. if nobody goes there at all, maybe she’ll have tons of candy. but if you’d rather go home…”
or, tammy isn't going to let a single house on her street go unvisited on halloween. even if this particular house and its resident have a bit of a repuation.

the guys come over to talk business planning, a new venture scott and luis have come up with, and cassie tries to get them all to vote on hope’s costume. “why don’t you just let hope be the tiebreaker?” asks dave, leaning back in his chair so the front legs lift slightly off the floor. “since it’s her, and all.” which is a nice thought, really, but it’s not an option, according to cassie.
or, hope gets absolutely no say in who (or what) she's dressing up as for halloween. and everyone has a lot of opinions. can be read as a standalone, but works really nicely as a follow-up to i don't know about these heavy hands.

“wait, are we all going trick-or-treating?” constance pops up by debbie’s elbow. when debbie only shrugs, the dark-haired girl joins the kids in a rather intense hunt for good superhero costumes. essentially an overgrown child herself, she fits right in, dragging nine-ball into the chaos with her, and they make their rounds in not one, not two, but three stores before they find everything they want. they spend half of it calling nonsensical things that debbie doesn’t understand back and forth to each other; it sort of makes debbie’s head hurt, a little (but she doesn’t mind as much as she should).
or, the ocean's 8 ladies (plus tammy's kids) dress up as superheroes. also, constance has a lot of questions about just how debbie and tammy's relationship slow-built into what it is now.

at the beginning of october, cassie tugs at her sleeve in the grocery store next to a towering display of candy – boxes upon boxes of it, forming something that looks a lot like the avengers tower. “hope, do you like halloween?” she asks, blinking innocently up at hope while she tries to figure out how the hell to answer that.

or, the ocean's 8 ladies as detectives of brooklyn’s 99th precinct. because there's no way it's not hilarious to imagine these idiot criminals as cops.
