"i'm seeing someone." she blurts it out without thinking it through, the words off her tongue before she can catch them, and then she can't take them back. they hang in the balance between them and she watches the way his face changes, his jaw setting stubbornly, a flicker in his eyes full of determination not to let her see right through them. it emboldens her, tells her that maybe lying is the best thing to do.
or, holly asks marvyn for a favour, and things get a little out of hand.

she takes the shot. as the ball sails through the air, they hold a collective breath. it hits the rim, teeters there for the barest of indecisive moments, and then falls away. it bounces once, twice, three times; holly moves mindlessly to catch the ball, to stop it before the next time it makes contact with the floor. when she turns to look at him, marvyn's eyes are closed, and something in her heart seems to twist at the sight. "okay," he says, in the end. it feels as if it's been an eternity. the distance between them stretches out forever.
or, five times holly misses the shot, and one time she doesn't.

it's less of an official announcement and more a case of simply using her eyes, because emma would have to be blind not to see the way that her dad and holly look at each other. they’re not exactly subtle. holly looks at him like he’s the sun and he looks at her like she’s the stars, and it would be a little sickening if emma didn’t think it was actually sort of adorable.

she doesn't know exactly when it crept up on her. she’s been ignoring it because it’s not practical, and if there’s one thing she learned from the slow crumble of her marriage, it’s that she could use a little practicality. and he’s infuriating, that’s what he is – not-so-subtle asides about dishwashers and hvac filters because he just can’t stand to ask for help without a dig or eight – and still, there are feelings there that she hasn’t let herself define. feelings that she doesn’t want to talk about, because that’s not the smart shot to take.

“It’s your birthday, isn’t it?” Effie asks, mildly.
“Lucky me,” Haymitch mutters back, turning his head to offer her his most award-winning grin. The roguish rascal he had turned into during his interview. Sharp teeth pulled back just barely short of a snarl.
Effie seems unaffected, completely unbothered as she settles down across the table from him. She folds her hands over each other, resting them gently on the table. Her head tilts to the side, almost imperceivable, her eyes soft, just like the rest of her face. The look of sympathy she so often turns onto him is nothing new. Her eyes flit between his face, her mouth opening and closing for a handful of seconds as the time ticks away into nothingness, disappearing through both of their hands.
“Save it,” Haymitch says, the first to speak. He twists his head back to the side, squeezing his eyes shut as the pounding headache he’s been nursing returns full force. “Don’t get a cake.”
Effie makes a disapproving noise. “I’ll do you one better,” she says, and disappears from the corner of his eye like a ghost.
