Toni Shalifoe was solid against her back, the two of them were pressed together in the saddle like palms in prayer. The whole world had narrowed to that point: the two of them astride Toni’s palomino, the jagged patch of horizon ahead, the deafening roar of hooves beneath them.
Toni snaked her left arm around Shelby’s middle and held her steady. “Whatever you do, Shelby Goodkind,” Toni’s voice was fervent and low against her neck and Shelby felt the vibrations of her voice everywhere. “Do not look back. Eyes on the horizon. Hear me?”
