Neat circle at the top of his right calf, cigarette burn (his). Shiny-white gash inching its way from his stomach to the waistband of his underwear, appendix removal. (You’d had to call the ambulance.) There are new additions, but you’re so sure he would tell you everything about them if you asked that it already feels as though you know where he got those scars after all. He would offer you the story of his body like saying grace before supper.

The street lights haloed Boris, spilling orange light through his hair and around his face. It was only then that Theo heard the music again, it was muffled through the windows of the car, at first he didn’t recognise what it was. Then the words ‘I’m not in love’ cut through Theo’s head and he knew exactly what it was. He didn’t miss the irony, though he wished he had.

It reminded him of the version of Musée Rodin’s The Kiss that sat in the Tate’s collection, pockmarked and scarred from sitting in a parlour among soldiers during the war, but still standing as a testament to the carnal desires of two lovers. Twisted around each other, hands on the bed between them, their positions almost exactly mirrored that of the sculpture. The thought that together they could be a work of art pushed Theo forward.
Alternatively titled: Theo Decker needs to get his shit together.

Boris thinks a lot about how they’d die in Vegas. Boris with some dramatic explosive death, chaotic and loud and maybe an accident. Falling off a building or getting hit by a car or killing himself with drugs. Theo would implode in on himself, quiet and polite and nondisruptive. Drinking himself to death or bleeding out in a bathtub. Both boys just like dying stars, deciding whether it’s worth it to turn into a black hole or not.
Theo and Boris keep finding each other, for better or for worse.

(Come to think of it, Boris smiled the most when he was scared.) Theo banishes the thought from his head.
Or, the return of the Goldfinch should've meant the end of their story, but instead it starts a new adventure entirely.
