Blur had just dropped Parklife and half the country suddenly decided it was cool to wear tracksuits and pretend they were deep. Oasis were about to release Definitely Maybe and Liam Gallagher’s eyebrows were already more famous than most Britpop bassists. And in the middle of it all was this stupid fake feud between the two bands, mostly stirred up by the NME, but also because Liam was a menace and Damon had a god complex and neither of them could shut up for longer than two minutes.

"Do you have a cigarette?" I asked. I watched him dig into his pockets, pull out a crumpled pack with a few filters left, then a lighter. I took a few steps closer as I put the cigarette between my lips. I wasn’t much of a smoker, but I think cigarettes work like a breathing exercise: you focus so much on smoking you don’t notice your breathing getting deeper, more rhythmic, perfect, calm. A mental trick you play on yourself, nothing but a lie.
That’s the thing about addictions. You lie to yourself all the time, try to convince yourself being drunk actually feels good, that you feel better like that, warm-skinned. You tell yourself you’re funnier drunk, that you’re just saying out loud what you already thought sober. And Graham was a master at this — lying so much he fell for his own lies.
See how it works? My mind always circles back to him somehow, the feel of a cigarette between my lips took me back to every drunk excuse we made when we ended up like that, one on top of the other.

Damon blinked at him for a few moments and pressed his lips together. “I can think of a few good reasons.”
“Yeah, what then? Fucking britpop?”
“Yes, well,” Damon chuckled awkwardly, “and you’re you and I’m me.”
Liam huffed out a sharp breath and set his jaw. He stood and moved so close to Damon’s face that he could see all the different shades and textures in his eyes. “You don’t know nothing about me.”
“And I suppose you know me?”
