Summary
Earth spits him out into existence like a rotten piece of meat. His coming to life is sudden, disorienting, violent in its own right. He draws a frantic inhale, lungs formed anew, and scrambles to his feet like a foal on unsteady legs.
He senses difference before he even sees it: the fresh air being the most sudden assault to his nostrils. He was so used to that trapped smell of corpse fluids (because those obviously don't go away with revival) and a sickly sweet mix of blood and rotten potatoes (which always gave him a sense of convoluted nostalgia), that a single, sharp, shallow breath is all it takes to stop him in his tracks completely. Then he catches up on everything else: the sounds, sharpened by his restored hearing, the sight, for the time allowing him only a very boring view of a stoney wall (but still! Not obsidian!), cold breeze washing over his body, and then, what seems to be the most important of it all, the weight on his back.
