Ashlyn's stomach drops, "Mom?"
"There's- " Her mom blinks, "There are, uh, hearts. Floating above your head."
"What?" Ashlyn looks up and sees exactly what her mom described. Three translucent pink hearts hover high above her head, drifting lazily like smoke. She waves her hand through them and they dissipate, only to reform a second later.
She looks at her dad, who had gotten up from the couch at the urgency in his wife’s voice, and both her parents' eyes track upward again. There are five hearts now.
"What the hell?"

“What's wrong?”
“He has a girlfriend!” Barty wailed, shoving his phone with the picture in front of Regulus’ face.
“You mean a boyfriend? That's a guy,” Regulus pointed out.
“What?” Barty took another look at the picture. It was a guy, and he reminded Barty of his ex he had broken up with last year in the early spring.
“You know who he reminds me of?” Regulus prompted.
“Don't even say her name,” Barty threatened.
