Summary
Israel Hands is fifteen when he meets Edward Teach.
Edward is seventeen, and the most compelling man Israel has ever seen. They’re both deckhands on a Dutch merchant ship, and at night Edward keeps them both up long past midnight with talk; they sleep in two slung hammocks beside one another, Israel curled up like he used to with his sister, Edward slung out with long limbs and dark skin, his black hair short yet and still about his ears, his arms, his fingers untouched by ink. “I’ve got plans, Iz,” he says in that soft voice, “I’ve got big plans. Bigger than spice trades and pigs.”
Israel watches his booted foot swing the hammock side to side. “I know you do.”

Stede catches up with his ship just in time to catch Lucius off the side, toppling down with an offended squawk to land headfirst in a soggy coil of greenish-brown rope. “Yeah, and fuck you too!” He bellows up at the ship, before turning and seeing his rescuer. His eyes widen. “Captain?”

Summary
Essek Theylss is born on a cold, wet night in winter, and named Essek at random. They don't think he's a new soul, and they won't find out he is an unconsecuted (and therefore fresh) being until almost his twentieth year; his mother has him with the intent to keep great-grandfather in the family, in both body and soul. He has the little thumbprint on his wrist, though, bright orange, so light it almost glows. Nobody knows what to do with it. It certainly doesn't wash off, no matter how hard his mother, his aunts, and his nursemaids try.

Summary
The painting is one he remembers sitting for, when he was eleven, at the beginning of May. He looks at it now, the dust on the frame, the way the old untreated paint has begun to fleck around the corners, the fear in his younger eyes; even living paintings reflect what they see, and this Draco has been in Malfoy Manor for the past two years, as regrettably as the corporeal version. He is smaller than Draco ever remembers being, but there are no bags under his eyes, and when he resumes looking back behind the perspective, towards his mother, there is childish pride and love there.
“I’m sorry,” he tells the little boy in the portrait. He feels hot against his eyes but he refuses to cry, or to feel much of anything.
***
When 17-year-old Draco Malfoy accidentally uses a magical storm on the night before his death to communicate with his younger self, the ramifications on an 11-year-old Draco are huge. Entering Hogwarts with a warning ringing in his ears and a strange voice in his head, one small shift in attitude might change the Wizarding World forever - but for good, or ill?

Summary
When Essek's mother discovers that he is not his own great-grandfather, she rather loses interest in him. By that time Verin has been born, the intended new soul; one unconsecuted child is considered quite enough to bring to each generation of Xhorhasian high society, to prevent the oversaturation of the population.
When it comes out that both Theylss boys are new souls, Verin shines in his clear naivety, the way he smiles and sits by the feet of the elders and asks to be taught about the Luxon. Essek is already too old to play those games, and he lurks by the side of the windows, by the curtains, watching Verin charm the women thousands of years older than both of them. Verin is the new soul as it should be - Essek is a failed experiment.
So it follows that Essek is young when he realises he has to be exceptional to be noticed.

Summary
The old man is... strange. Becomes stranger the longer Edmund observes.
His crown is bare, his hair long and silvery-grey, although there is a blue hat sitting beside him, tall and pointed and made of a sort of soft, stiff material. Beside the hat there is a long, gnarled staff, something that looks like it has been grown, not crafted, curling wood clutching a pale white crystal within it. It's seen use. The old man himself is unarmoured, wearing simple grey robes and a dark cloak, although Edmund can see the scabbard on his leather belt, long, ancient, and well-kept. The sword inside must be beautiful.
"You know," the old man says, without ever turning from the fire, "When a young man misses the taste of rabbit, he would do better to come and ask for some, rather than staring like some fool without his tongue or manners."

Summary
Caduceus always thought, growing up, that he was a crowded person. He contained multitudes. He woke up every morning in the same bed as Colton, and when Colton grew too long for their bed the Clay siblings spent a merry week making blankets and pulling woollens into a sort of a nest, pillows, old clothes that no longer fit, and all four of them slept in the same room. It got emptier.
It was Caduceus and Clarabelle left, when Colton and Calliope had gone. They used to hug at night, head on the same pillow, and Caduceus would think: I am a crowded person. There is space in me for multitudes.
And then he was alone.

Summary
Lucien laughs again, and then bends, his fingers replacing his sword at Caleb's throat, "You make pretty sounds when you're hurt," he tells Caleb, like a compliment, like Caleb should be happy, "I will admit, I'll miss your little kitty-cats."
And he wraps one firm, strong hand around Caleb's throat, and hefts him into the air, his grip so tight that Caleb can't even scream anymore. He's bruising. "They'll miss them more, though," Lucien whispers in his ear, and then he opens his mouth, and Caleb can see something black and brackish, like a gas, like a poison, like cursed blood, and then Lucien is pulling Caleb towards him like a ragdoll and then Caleb can feel nothing but pain, a maelstrom of pain, and blood-hot fingers on his jaw.

Summary
"Don't stop your song on my account," Susan says, stepping into the room. It is, like every other room in Rivendell, neither inside nor out, but it is slightly more protected than most; paintings decorate the walls, dark, spots of white light like reedy points of hope, swords, crowns, tears on the cheeks of ethereal elves neither male nor female.
The singer is the ranger, the one that had brought Lucy and Edmund back to her. He sits on the opposite side of the room, against another set of stairs, barefoot and barely clothed, a nightshirt untied and halfway open against his chest. His hair had been messy with the dirt of the road and sweat, but now his beard has been trimmed and his hair brushed, washed; all the same he has that air to him that all rangers have. Half-wild. Kept in only by his own will. "I did not know you were still awake, lady." His nightshirt is red and old, worn, and beautiful. Susan can see the stitching in the places it has not quite worn away, around the square neck and the sleeves, silver thread. It shines in the moonlight.

Summary
“Bren,” Veth whispers, and the nurses grouped in the door like bubbles watch on, “It’s Veth.” She climbs onto the chair by the bed and touches his elbow, very, very gently. “You said you wanted to see me.”
Across his cheek, so small she might have missed it, she sees a tear escape his eye and fall from his skin to the hospital pillow below him. “Hello, old friend,” he says in a voice that rasps sandpaper, “It is good to see you. I’m sorry it’s been so long.”
