Summary
Kallias hates the Eastern provinces of Winter with every fiber of his being. They're wrong, just wrong. Backwards and militaristic and not nearly so pristine as his home in the West.
Viviane, newly returned from a few years out West, likes it just as much as she likes what she's heard of its princeling - that is to say, not at all.
When they meet it's on sight. So is a couple other things. Like the mating bond both would kill to get rid of.

“Long night?” she quipped, bitterness lacing her tone as she sharpened a particularly formidable arrow tip.
“What are you asking me, Viviane?”
Rare of him to use her name.
Kal leveled her a stare, which always had a way of undoing her. Those piercing blue eyes, sharper than honed sapphires, saw it all. The invisible essence beneath her skin.
Viviane was never any good at backing down from that stare. Or a fight.
“I’m asking you if it's exhausting having half the females in Prythian line up outside of your door each night.”“Careful, little wren,” Kal murmured with a cool grin, “I might start getting the wrong idea.”
A long pause as her honest eyes sought his. “Maybe you should.”
Kal’s scent spiked subtly as he registered her meaning, though his face remained unreadable. “Those are very brave words, Viviane.”
She stood.
“There is an inscription carved into the summit of the Northern Rift, do you know what it says?” She peered over the lake in search of game.
Kal shook his head, ivory strands falling across his dark brow.
Viviane carefully drew an arrow from over her shoulder.
“Cowards die a thousand deaths, but the valiant only die once.”

Viviane had not been Under the Mountain. As her childhood friend, Kallias had been protective of her to a fault over the years- had placed the sharp-minded female on border duty to avoid the scheming of his court. He didn't let her near Amarantha, either. Didn't let anyone get a whiff of what he felt for his white-haired friend, who had no clue- not one- that he had loved her his entire life.
Kallias has been in love with his best friend his entire life. He swore he'd marry her just as soon as he worked up the nerve to ask if she loved him back.
