Supposing the proposal to have been brought about by Sonya’s qualities would be a grave mistake indeed in the same way that believing an excess of feeling in the old Prince Bolkonsky had led upon such a path. The plain truth was the Prince had proposed because he could, because his eccentric nature demanded it and because he thought it a move that would most discompose his family.
