    Summary

Holmes gets called away suddenly to solve a case and writes letters to Watson keeping him informed. Two of the letters contain an unfamiliar comma in the middle of a very familiar phrase. Watson frets over what it’s supposed to mean, if anything at all.

“Holmes stepped closer to me; merely an intimate distance separated us. It was not uncommon for us to disregard personal boundaries, but with my mind currently hung up on an incriminating comma, it was closer than I was comfortable with.

“Tell me what is troubling you,” he requested softly, showing only genuine concern for me.

I looked up slightly, into his eyes, and shook my head again, “I cannot. It’s impertinent, improper, and quite possibly indecent.”

“My dearest Watson, there is nothing you could say to me that I would judge you harshly for. I know the good man that you are; there is no danger here.”

My heart leapt at the endearment and I knew that I could not continue living like this, ever wondering if there was maybe something more between us than friendship.

“On the contrary, I fear that there is incredible danger in what I am about to ask of you.”"

“Watson!” my friend called. “Come to the window.”

I placed my thumb in my book but did not stand. Years together had taught me his ways, as various and numerable as they were, and I knew the friendly command for what it was: the beginning of some scheme.

    Summary

The man, sitting alone at a table for four, nervously waved at them, all standing by the hostess’ stand. Elliot watched—in real, horrific time—as his father’s stress melted away, easily falling back into a comfortable—comfortable!—smile. “Oh, there’s 7! Come see, you two.”

Elliot had known that as soon as he’d seen the man’s stupid burger hat across the building.

    (here. it rained here.)

“Who the hell are you calling up? The mob? Are you in a gang?” She said half-jokingly, even as she felt a twinge of anxiety at his nervousness. Quietly, her chest still panged that he couldn’t pick her up himself in the first place.

His end was silent for a moment. Then, “No, sheesh, just—Look for a black classy car with really tinted windows and fuzzy dice hanging on the rearview. I promise he’s nice. He’ll be there in twenty. Okay?”

He was absolutely in a gang.

The weather's turned awful and nobody is there to give Mia a ride home from school. It's a good thing that Elliot has a secret boyfriend in the area he's not quite ready to reveal the existence of.

    Summary

Mia gets woken up late at night and discovers Elliot missing from his bed.

Fearing the worst—that once again he'd vanished without a trace into the shadows—she searches the house and finally finds him on the roof, forlornly watching the stars. They haven't talked much about where he'd been all those months, the topic rendered unapproachable by the distant look in his eyes and the way his hands trembled when he thought nobody was looking. Maybe, in the darkness beneath the horizon, he'd say something.

He'd always been the strongest person Mia had ever known. She sits down beside him and turns her face to the sky.
