    “Will you finish my hair?” 

    He Xuan comes back to herself when a hairbrush is waved in her direction. Shi Qingxuan blinks at her with that lazy tiredness she gets every night. Taking the silver brush from her hand, He Xuan lowers herself behind Shi Qingxuan and begins running the soft bristles through her curls. They stretch out and spring back up. Now devoid of the day’s frizz. 

    “Thank you, He-jie. I appreciate it.” It’s what she says every night as they go through this routine. He Xuan says nothing. She rarely ever does. “We should go to the beach tomorrow. Or to the pier. There’s a Ferris Wheel. Have you ever been on a Ferris Wheel? Ge took me when I was really little, but I didn’t like it very much. I think I was scared of heights back then. But I wouldn’t be scared with you, He-jie.” She stops to laugh, a rare break in the tumbling words that seem almost endless. 

    Shi Qingxuan even chatters in her sleep. He Xuan hates that she knows this.
