This story is set in the aftermath of Ep 5x21, The Best Man. In this episode, Maxwell finds out about Fran nearly running away with his brother, Nigel, 18 months earlier. When he states that he can’t forgive Fran yet, she gives him back his ring. CC points out to Fran that Maxwell hadn’t been a saint either, having pursued ~something~ with Marla Maples 18 months earlier. Fran brings Marla to the house to remind him that he hasn’t been so innocent either, leading Fran and Max to make up. I always wondered just how far Max and Marla went, and in this fanfiction, Fran does too…

For the last five nights, it’s been the same: they watch TV with the kids, then send them all upstairs and watch a late-night show with just the two of them. About halfway through, Mr. Sheffield’s hand will stray, haltingly and hesitant, finally coming to rest lightly on her knee. Then she’ll tuck herself up against his side until the credits begin to roll.
And then they head upstairs together, with Mr. Sheffield falling behind her up the staircase as if he’s just too tired to keep pace but she knows exactly what he’s doing. More like looking at.
Then once they reach her bedroom door, he leans in to kiss her, sweet and soft with his hands resting respectfully high up on her back. It’s nice. It’s the same thing every night. It’s not nearly enough.
It is actually driving her crazy.
