Their mom didn’t do much other than glance at Yura in the rearview mirror, and make a half-assed request to stop fighting. It seemed to appease Anya, just a little-- since she stopped hitting him in the leg, but she was still fuming in her seat.

The mud crunched easily under Olya’s boots. The morning air was deceptively calm, the Zone Transfer Sector building cast in a faint orange glow by the dying sunrise as she gradually made her way closer.
She’d been dreading today’s mission for weeks already. As much as Nikita loved to say she had no Talent, she wasn’t blind: even though she’d been working as a stalker for a few years now, and Kolya and Sergei had been doing it for many more, no amount of experience could change the fact that this was practically suicide. Kolya had got it into his head that there was something at the end of the old industrial tunnel under some-place-or-another, and that it would be a quick in-and-out mission, and that the flesh-melting properties of the tunnel were only a rumour anyway.
Not a single person who’d gone out with intention to enter it had returned. Kolya said they’d lacked experience. Their group would be out of the Zone before midday.
(They called it the meat grinder for a reason.)
