Summary
“Don’t worry about it, it’ll all work out for the best,” Shirogane says and reaches across the table to place his hand on top of Keith’s. Maybe it could be seen as an innocent gesture, supportive and friendly, but Shirogane then keeps his hand there. His thumb rubs soothingly back and forth across Keith’s skin, until Keith finally turns his palm upwards so they can hold hands.
They are now holding hands.
Right here, in the middle of the Garrison lunch room, at a large table surrounded by all the MFEs and Paladins.

Summary
“Thanks, Shiro,” Keith mutters, “but that doesn’t make it less awkward when I have to turn down a bunch of people I don’t even know. Which I’m sure you know about too. I mean, which one of us do you think all these guys have been asking first before moving onto the other?”
Shiro laughs again, but then he pauses as a thought crosses his mind.
This is the point where he should stop, examine that thought, turn it over in his mind—then quickly let it pass by as he realizes how absolutely ridiculous it is, and never think of it again.
Shiro does not do that.
Instead, before he can even think about what it is he’s saying, he blurts out, “Hey, we should go together.”

Or: Shiro only wants to go with Keith to the ATLAS’ Valentine’s ball. Keith only wants to go with Shiro to the ATLAS’ Valentine’s ball. Shiro does not know this when he asks Keith to be his date.

Summary
It’s not until he’s halfway done sorting through everything that he grabs a pair of pajama pants and two envelopes fall out from between the folded fabric of the legs.
Shiro furrows his brows, looking down at where one of them landed on the floor by his feet. He puts the pants down and bends to pick it up before grabbing the other letter on his bed as well, then sits down on the mattress, tucking one foot under his thigh.
There’s nothing special about the envelopes themselves. Regular old white paper, with a small “1.” and “2.” written on them respectively.
Shiro has no idea who would have put them in there.

Summary
He doesn’t want to make it awkward, doesn't want to turn it into a thing by bringing it up and ruining the mood. But as good as Keith has always felt about winging things, this is something he doesn’t want to push through and hope that it all works out fine in the end.
Keith wants it to be good, wants to know it’s good, and not just for his own sake. He doesn’t want to find himself in a situation where something he wasn’t expecting happens, and, having no idea what to do about it, end up feeling like he has to pretend he has a handle on it.
Keith wants to be nervous if he’s feeling nervous.
He’s spent far too long wanting this and waiting for it to have it end up making him feel bad because he’s being stubborn and stupid about pushing through, only because he feels like he has to be the best there is on the first try.
So he wants to talk to Shiro about it.

Keith huffs out a breath, shoving his hands into the pockets of his ripped light wash jeans and kicking at an empty can of coke next to his feet. He’s just about to turn around and leave, give up on this stupid thing he’s managed to finally talk himself into doing, when there’s the shifting of movement behind him, followed by a loud thud, like the soles of boots hitting the ground.
Boots worn by someone tall and broad and heavy; as if someone with a body packed with muscles just hopped down from the bleachers to join Keith back here.

“I—I didn’t say—” Keith stammers for an answer, because it’s not as if his wish coming true is physically out of reach, an actual impossibility. Really. Keith would hardly need to move at all. Maybe lean up a bit on his tiptoes is all it would take for him to fit his lips against Shiro’s, and there he’d have it.
As much as Keith wants it, though, it’s not for him to take. Whether it’s his birthday or not.
