Rey would like to be as steady as the lighthouse, but she often fears that she’s more like the tumultuous waves below than anything else. She looks out at the roiling ocean now, the light revolving behind her and times her breaths to its oscillations.
In. Light. Out. Dark.
The mist that lands on her face feels like a distant memory of a gentle caress she’s never been able to place, so she breathes in the cold air to chase it away.

For the most part, Rey lives a quiet existence as the lightkeeper for her sleepy little coastal town. But as fate would have it, a distress call disrupts the peace one night and Rey helps a man lost in the darkness find his way to shore. It’s only upon meeting the errant sailor that she realizes she’s met him before.

His golden eyes are warm and open, inviting her to be honest. To lay it all out, here and now, confess the feelings that have been swirling in her head for the last few days (or weeks, if she’s being honest).
'I never got the chance to thank you for saving my life. Nobody’s ever jumped in front of lightning for me before. You could’ve died, and it made me realize just how much I care about you. The world needs you, I know, but so do I.'
Instead, she buries those words and finds other ones. Easier ones.
(or, it takes Katara 6 years to be honest with Zuko.)

Zuko falls to Azula's lightning, and Katara realizes she doesn’t want him to die. She doesn’t want anyone to die, but she especially doesn’t want him to die. Sometimes she thinks he’s the only one who understands, when the others are laughing and goofing off. What it’s like to have to try to be fun, to remind yourself that you’re just a kid too.
(And how stupid and typical of him to die this way, sacrificing himself for her.)
There’s not much else to do (she knows, she’s considered anything else she could possibly do). Katara pushes up her sleeves and sets to work saving his life.
