Caligula tried to stand, but my hand shot out, grabbing his arm roughly. He looked down at me, expression more annoyed than anything else. “Let go.” He said calmly. “You’ve lost.”
I know I’ve lost, I wanted to say, but the blood in my throat clogged my voice.
He still loomed above me, spear poised to stab me again. My grip on his arm was weak, both of us knew that. If anything, Caligula saw me as little threat.
But as his spear lowered to stab me again, he didn’t factor in one crucial thing.
I’ve got nothing left to lose.

He wants Jason. He wanted him at 17, and he still wants him at 24—and that knowledge is enough. Those other men are throwaways, Jason is the toy that gets kept.
