Then, Elphaba pulls a single poppy free from her bouquet. A tiny thing, so small and so lonely, now clasped in Elphaba’s left forefinger and thumb. Smile shy, glasses tipping down her nose as she holds it forward.
“For you, Miss Galinda,” she says gently, the words pulling her smile wider to show the shine of her teeth beneath.
And Galinda cannot help the way her heart stutters in her chest at the delicate gesture. Her hands shake as reaches out, plucks the flower free of Elphaba’s grasp and spins it slowly between her own fingers. The white petals swirl, stem wet and so soft against her skin, and she brings the flower to her nose.
“Thank you…”
