The fourth or fifth sleepless night, he got up, wandered into Ruan Lanzhu's bedroom and crawled under the duvet.
The bedding was pristine - not a single wrinkle, perfectly straight, and everything smelled new. No trace of the person who used to sit there and look up at Ling Jiushi with those eyes of his that asked questions Ling Jiushi couldn't answer.
He pulled the bedside table open, saw the kaleidoscope lying there, and barely stopped himself from throwing it at the wall.
By the time he finally stumbled into sleep, he'd forgotten all about dropping it on the bed.

He's hoping for – something wild and idealistic, probably. Something that would fit the moment, Xiao Zhan's red-rimmed eyes bright with unshed tears and all those eager faces screaming their names.
"You don't want me to answer that," Xiao Zhan says. For all his coddling, he's never lied to Xia Zhiguang. He'd rather be honest to the point of brutality.
Xia Zhiguang stumbles into the idol industry when he's fifteen. It takes him a while to find his way.

After all his wondering and all the unanswered messages, to see Xiao Zhan standing in front of him all the way out here seems like a miracle.
Xiao Zhan leans back against the railing and tips his head back into the breeze. The cap casts his face in shadow but Yibo can still hear and picture his megawatt smile.
"Here. I've been here. Waiting for you," Xiao Zhan says. Like that's a normal thing to say. "Aren't you happy to see me?"
Yibo closed the book on that wild summer long ago. He doesn't expect to be faced with it again almost ten years later.

The drought last season had been so severe that it seemed heaven-sent - a punishment, or a message. In some quarters it was said to be an expression of the rage of the heavens at who the Emperor kept by his side. It was further said that if that person was offered to the Great River, the rains would come.
"I hear I am to be tossed in the Great River," Xiao Zhan had said to Yibo, after one such court session.
"Don't be ridiculous," had been Yibo's rather rude response. "The next person who suggests it, I'll toss him in first."
More than a dozen years later, Emperor Yibo's favourite is faced with a challenge to his position.

Hulijing aren't that easy to subdue. He should know.
Peng Chuyue sighs. "He's - Chunhua is nothing like Zhanzhan. If it was Zhanzhan I'd be more worried about whoever's got him."
In which Yibo takes on a rescue mission for Peng Chuyue and Xiao Zhan gets cursed with something that removes his inhibitions. This proves very illuminating for everyone involved.

It's almost as gloomy here as it was back where he'd been. Almost, but for the man sitting on the steps, a blaze of light in the dark, the tails of his white shirt fluttering in the breeze, so still that he could be an apparition or a statue. Most of his face is covered by an opera mask, white paint and pink rouge and sharp brows, red lining around the eye holes.
The man's generous mouth curves under the mask. "You're not who I was expecting."
That's so far from the reaction Yibo might have imagined that he's not sure what to do with himself. He's misty, almost entirely see-through. There should at least be some screaming, surely.
Or, some things are so inevitable not even death can stop them.

Summary

His evaluating gaze isn't unfriendly; it only makes Yibo feel a little like he's been examined down to the bone. Xiao Zhan looks at him like this sometimes, although on him it comes across more like fierce curiosity.
"Once I decide on something, I don't change my mind," Yibo says, matching his even tone.
Peng Chuyue nods. "I thought so. Just make sure he knows that. Don't ever make him second-guess you."
In which Yibo experiences a shovel talk from a 19 year old, keeps his head above water and tries to hold on to his happy ending.

Summary
Lots of people think about quitting their day job for something brighter and stranger. It's one thing to think about, another to do it, and another to get as far as he has. So even if it's not what he originally wanted, Xiao Zhan tries to treasure and enjoy everything that comes along with his new life. He'll keep trying until he decides to give it up, whenever that is.
There's a lot to enjoy about his new gig. The script is fantastic, the production has actual money so the sets and costumes look good, and the directors and producers know what they're doing. Not much more he can ask for.
Then there's his main co-star.
Xiao Zhan's life is at a crossroads when he lands his first proper lead role. He's not looking to make it even more complicated.
