Here is the job description: a café sits immobile in its little block in whatever downtown street it’s built in. It’s not supposed to see or hear, or feel, and the people come and go as they please. Of course. It can’t hold onto its visitors, especially not cafés just as new as the freshman students that crowd its single-push doorway at 4 P.M. sharp everyday. Forgive it, then, if two boys come in radiant as the summer sun, laughing loudly at whatever new antics they come up with until the snakelike line finally spits them out onto the counter.

Summary
There is no clear moment, not really, but there is one that sticks out in his mind, when he knew with a sickening sort of thud inside him, a punch to the jaw in an anything goes bare-fist fight, no chance to hide his weak spots in the aftermath.
“No.” Suguru says, enunciating carefully, as though his lack of diction is the issue.
“But Suguru,” Satoru whines, heavy on the last syllable, and Suguru can feel Shoko shift beside him.
“Why do you say his name like that?” She snips before Satoru can continue with his impassioned plea or Suguru can try to intercede, cut him off. “Just say it normal, be normal.” She kicks out and misses Satoru, standing at the edge of the bed, and hits Suguru, who grunts in response. “Oops.”
Suguru waves it off.
“When is he ever normal?” He asks, rolling his eyes at her. Shoko snorts out a laugh, her leg resting over Suguru’s shin, a comforting warmth.
“So true.” Shoko responds, flicking open her phone.
“I’m literally right here.” Satoru practically shouts, tossing his sunglasses haphazardly onto Suguru’s bedside table, “terrible friendship, terrible friends,” and Suguru closes his eyes because he knows what is coming next, “Suguru,” Satoru whines again.

Summary
Yuuji knew, sort of, that the way his teachers usually behaved around them had to be, to some extent, an act. They were never very vulnerable around their students, and this, to Yuuji, made sense. They were those kinds of people, the kind others relied on to be strong for them. He thought he knew, well enough, that they were humans too, that they had human interactions and relationships: that they loved, dreamt. That they got tired. That they got gentle.
But watching them now, endearments of long-term lovers slipping from their lips so seamlessly Yuuji almost misses it– it's all put into perspective rather abruptly for him.

“Do you think I’m a bad person?”
Satoru sighs. He combs fingers through silky black strands, where he’s already pulled it free from all knots. He takes awhile to answer, and then, he says:
“Wanna know a secret? It’s kind of horrible.”
Suguru seems confused, a little out of it. He whispers back “Sure.”
Satoru looks at him meaningfully, and says,
“I don’t care.”

Or: It took some time, for Satoru to get over himself enough to see his best friend spiralling. Shoko cracks open the windows to Suguru's stuffy room and makes them lunch and thinks maybe late is better than never.

Satoru shrugged. "I'm afraid I'm not too close to that line of thought."
"Say, doc," he interrupted softly, almost immediately. "Have you ever thought about death?"

No one yells for them to shut up. There’s a pause, a short breath in, before they start with a basic set of scales-

“Stop tiptoeing around me.” Satoru’s voice was more of a plea than an order.
Suguru still tensed up at the words. “Well now you’re the one not making that easy.” He mumbled under his breath, making a visible effort to keep his eyes glued to Satoru’s face, trying to prove a point.
“Why?” Satoru asked forcefully. “Why is it not easy?”
Suguru searched Satoru’s face with that contained distress that was oh so him. “Because you’re just- ” He blurted out before catching himself. “You’re just not easy.”
