Likewise, Q finds himself being presented with a task that will ask him to stick his neck out for an agent that he doesn't really know yet... and which will also put him more in harm's way than he anticipated.
Q might not be the battle-trained agent that 007 is, but one thing is for sure: now that he's promised to help the man, he might bruise, but he won't break.

Bond's hand skitters across the wall, nearly biting his tongue as his shoulder is forced to catch his weight. The shaft of sunlight at the top of the ladder mocks him as he looks up at a crystal clear sky. A very empty sky.
"What did you say?"
"The missiles." Q pauses for the words to sink in, knowing what he's done. "I didn't- I couldn't-"
"No," James growls. "Do your damn job."
Gathering his courage, Q replies, "I will, when you get off the damn island."

“Do try to return everything in one piece,” he said, daring to look 007 in the eye at last.
“I often wonder why Quartermasters bother to tell me that,” 007 replied, his tone one of gentle amusement. “They’re not sending me to Argentina for a sightseeing tour, you know.”
Q rolled his eyes, leaning into his irritation. “Every other agent manages to return their equipment in one piece,” he snapped. “You might be able to dazzle M into giving you a pass, but I don’t work that way. I take pride in my work and I expect agents to do the same.”
He was a little surprised at the vehemence in his own voice, and even more surprised by the broad grin that spread across 007’s features. Head cocked to one side, Bond gave him a long, appraising look that raised the hairs on the back of his neck.
“Pride,” he said at last, his voice soft as velvet. “Yes, of course. You would.”
Needled, Q shot back, “You haven’t the slightest idea what I would or wouldn’t, 007.” The conversation had veered into uncomfortable territory, and he scrambled to escape. “Just look after it,” he said, making a speedy retreat to his office. He could feel 007’s eyes on his back the whole way.

Summary
The man moved with the same predatory grace he always had, and if he had aged in the past five years (it was a bit hard to tell from a subpar camera on the other side of the street) then he had aged well. Which was all entirely predictable of course. No, what had thrown Q and everyone else in the ops center who had ever met Bond or read his file was the way that he was dressed - faded blue jeans with holes in the knees, a t-shirt from some unidentifiable but probably local surf shop, and-
“Are you wearing Converse?” demanded Q before he could think better of it.
Bond’s eyes unerringly found the camera through which Q was watching, an expression of vague displeasure. “Well, I don’t generally make a habit of wearing suits to fix my boat, and I doubted you had the patience for me to change.” .James Bond has been retired for five years. But when a highly sensitive mission goes to hell just a few miles from where he as settled down Q is forced to ask for his help. Bond and Q return easily to their old ways - they are also forced to finally confront their feelings for each other.
