    Summary

Kaoru knew he still wasn't sleepin’ right. He'd started takin’ pills and it seemed as though, despite that, he slept even less. She never asked him about it, but she could hear him walkin’ around at night. Goin’ to the bathroom or to get a glass of water or to eat his dinner when he'd said earlier that he wasn't hungry. Sometimes she heard him cryin’ too.

It didn't make sense why he was still cryin’. He only ever cries about Hikaru, but Hikaru was back now, so why?

(Or: Kaoru knows her brother is suffering, but doesn't understand why. He's been acting weird ever since that near-deadly night on the mountain. Much gloomier than normal. She wants her brother to go back to being happy again. She knows it has something to do with Hikaru, but what happened between them? If her brother is just gonna keep on insisting everything is okay (clearly, it's not), she might have to ask the other boy instead, even if that means stepping outside of the house.)

    Summary

Yoshikaru Week 2025, Day 2: Festival

You and Kaoru both stand quietly and slurp your noodles; Yoshiki exists beside you, carrying Kaoru's stuffed frog under one arm and your stuffed alligator under the other.

"Man... the rain's gettin' the decorations all soaked."

Yoshiki doesn't respond — not even to just say "yeah" or something like he normally would.

"Ya bummed everything's gettin' wet or somethin'?"

"Nah. We were just gonna send it all down the river later anyway."

Empathy and compassion don't come naturally to you. Most of the time in social situations you don't really get what's going on. It's different with Yoshiki, though. You know something's on his mind — you don't know how you know, but you know.

Or: Hikaru, Yoshiki, and Kaoru attend Kubitachi's Tanabata festival. It starts to rain.

    Summary

Is it selfish to accept this love, if Hikaru never had any choice but to feel it?

Yoshiki looks up from his phone, abandoning the article on kitten care to stare at Hikaru. They barely fit side by side on his futon, but these days Hikaru always winds up mostly on top of Yoshiki anyway when they roll out a spare. It’s not really worth the effort. And Yoshiki has gotten used to Hikaru’s disregard for personal space.

He can’t deny he enjoys it. Not anymore. Especially not now, when the floor is cold and frost creeps along the windows.

It’ll have been a year soon. So soon. Just a few more weeks.

Time refuses to stop, more of a monster than anything else Yoshiki has encountered.

Or: Yoshiki grapples with whether or not “Hikaru” has the autonomy to truly love him if his companionship is the result of fulfilling a wish.

    Summary

    “I want to eat you.”

Yoshiki’s hands still. ‘Hikaru’ bites the inside of his cheek, willing tears to stay at bay.

    “Would you?” Yoshiki asks shakily.

Only if you’d let me, if you want.

    Summary

You've never done it yourself, but you understand the process that would follow: cutting the head off to kill it, probably; the scalding in hot water, to loosen everything up; plucking and rubbing, paying special attention to the wing and tail feathers...

You don't want to imagine it, but you do. You think of raw chicken. You swallow hard. The fingers on your dominant hand flex slightly without your permission.

"Man... Animals are so cool." He's right. You look back at them again, alive and whole, and wish you had half their skill at curling up into themselves.

Or: Yoshiki Tsujinaka has passing interactions with the local wildlife, some subjects more interesting than others.
