In Deborah’s defense, she thought Ava was asleep. It was a poor defense, she could admit. The jet hadn’t even hit cruising altitude yet. Ava’s forehead was still sweaty when they boarded from the mad dash through the casino. It really was a piss-poor defense.
And though she could admit it, she’d only admit it to herself.
So there’s really nothing she can say when Ava catches the big blocky text on her phone screen.

“You think I hate you for it. But the truth is, I hate myself more. Because I look at you and I see everything you could be, and I know this—” She gestured vaguely at the yacht, the glittering skyline, her own body in its immaculate suit. “This isn’t it.”
