“What’s this for?” Keith asked instead. The question gave him time to study Shiro’s expression and body language to try and gauge how he was supposed to react.
“For your birthday,” Shiro answered simply.
Keith immediately tensed and thrusted the present back into Shiro’s hands. “You—You didn’t have to get me anything,” he said quickly, rushing to get his words in.
“Hey, no, I wanted to get you something,” Shiro pointed out. Shiro tried to hand the present back to him, but Keith had already clasped his hands behind his back. Keith kept his gaze on his shoes and refused to look up, waiting for the inevitable scolding that was to come.Or, Shiro is doing his best to get to know Keith, but unfortunately, Keith's walls won't come down as easily as Shiro had hoped.

Summary
Occasionally he would look over to see Keith’s eyes drooping, his head dropping slightly. Finally, an hour later when Shiro looked up to rub at his eyes and the words on the paper were starting to blur together, did he realize that Keith had finally fallen asleep.
His head was buried in his arms but Shiro could see enough of his relaxed face and the way his back rose and fell slowly to tell that he was passed out.

Keith overworks himself and Shiro and Adam are determined to get to the bottom of just why he does so.

Adam hums quietly. "Do you think he's telling the truth?"
He spent a lot of time getting to know Keith before making the decision to bring him home. In all those months, not once did he ever give Shiro any reason to believe what all the social workers seemed to say about him—still not even once in all these months since taking him in. Anyone who put in more than minimal effort to understand him would realize that Keith’s “acting out” almost always meant he just needed a little help.
When he takes a deep breath and puts everything else aside—when he thinks about the Keith that he knows, rather than the Keith that everyone else has told him about—the answer is easy.
