Summary
“And what about you? Are you in safe hands?”
Robby runs a hand through his beard. He thinks about Whitaker clinging on behind him on the bike. He’d hold on so tight that it was like he was trying to pull Robby into his chest rather than himself into Robby’s back.
“I don’t know about that either.”
-
Sick with their own separate miseries, Robby and Whitaker take a trip out to Nebraska together on Robby's motorcycle. They don't expect to find what they need in each other. And yet...

Summary
He thinks very little about the night of the assault. He thinks far too much about the morning after, about Robby’s hand on his wrist, Robby’s arm around his shoulder, Robby’s mouth against his hair, Robby’s fingers sliding a needle into his vein.
He wonders if a therapist would call that a trauma response or a coping mechanism, and decides that he much prefers not knowing what they would say.

Summary
“... BP 129 over 76, response to pain but disoriented on scene. Whitaker here found him.” Dr. Robby glanced at Whitaker.
“You found him?” Santos asked Whitaker. She had shown up halfway through the brief. “What was he, passed out on the street?”
“No, uh, he had fallen out of a top bunk at his shelter.”
Santos looked confused. “Isn't it your day off? And I thought the street team doesn't go out till at least 10am?”
Whitaker felt a great need to disappear. “Yeah, it is, and, uh, no we don't."
"Then what were you doing at the shelter?" Dr. Robby asked, and Whitaker could see the answer dawn on him the second the words left his mouth.
-
TLDR; Whitaker is sleeping at a shelter when someone there is injured and brought to PTMC. Questions, and answers, ensue. For the sake of plot Santos never found Whitaker in the empty hospital wing.
