Summary
Water looks black in the moonlight, too, was what Will thought as he plummeted toward it. And— What a way to die. This was always how I was going to die.
Embarrassingly, Will didn’t die. He didn’t know that at first, though. He fell, and he fell, and he fell, somehow keeping Hannibal in his vice grip all the way down, but when he hit the water he felt nothing at all. He entered the blackness– maybe water under moonlight, maybe blood– and it held him like a lover would.

Summary
“You know why I am here,” you say.
“I know,” he replies. Then he repeats: “I just wanted to see you.”
He holds out the bottle to you again, and this time, you take it. It burns terribly going down, and you drink too much at once, but he just laughs. You love his laugh. He takes your free hand in both of his– your other is still dragging the sword behind you. You love his hands. You love his face and his hair and his ratty sweaters. You’d love his eyes so much better if they were back in your face.

“It’s probably a good thing. I know what happens to people named Gideon when you give them soup.”
Harrow blinked up at Gideon several times, eyes like black holes. “I’m sorry?”
“You know, on the Mithraeum?” Gideon replied, suddenly very worried she was about to be killed without the help of bone marrow in her soup.
“How do you know about that?”

Summary
“Have you slept at all? It’s nearly morning,” Harrow said, almost exasperated, but more worried than anything else. Gross.
Gideon made another noncommittal noise. Harrow placed a hand on her shoulder; it was only then that she turned around to look at the other girl. Harrow’s face was unpainted– it was more and more these days, Gideon was too nervous to ask why– and her hair was unbrushed. She looked as if she had just woken up, which, of course, she had.
Gideon looked at her eyes last, because she always did. It was still strange, her own eyes in Harrow’s face. It was even stranger to look in the mirror and see Harrow’s black eyes looking back at her. It was a good kind of strange, though. It was a reminder of what she would never, not in her entire life, forget– that she was a part of Harrow now, and Harrow was a part of her. More simply, that she was Harrow’s, and Harrow was hers.
“Come back to bed, beloved," Harrow said, and Gideon couldn’t have argued with her if she wanted to.

Summary
”What’s the point of painting someone like this?”
“What do you mean, beloved?”
”She looks like she’s chewing a wasp.”
“And? What is wrong with that?”
“It’s unflattering. Unrefined. You’d wonder why he didn’t tell her to, you know, perk up a bit.”
Armand stifles a laugh with his hand. Daniel glances over at him, and can’t help softly smiling. Preening. He likes that it amuses Armand when he behaves like a philistine.
”I still fail to see the problem. There is something to be said for preserving someone in the imperfect stages.”
Armand can look so tender when he smiles, sometimes. Butter really wouldn’t melt, when he gives Daniel that shy look from under his eyelashes, like they both don’t know what he’s thinking.

Summary
A young woman stands in her bedroom. Today is not her birthday, but even if it was, she would be a little too old to need it marked with presents, cakes, or other childish things. What she does need, as a savvy sophisticate poised at the precipice of personhood, is a name.
What will this young woman’s name be?

“You are not a person,” Armand says, “and Louis desires me more than you could imagine. I am—everything to him. Everything.”
“Yeah,” the boy drawls, following Armand with his hands, his lips, the wet press of his teeth. “Keep selling it.”
or: Armand disobeys Louis and kills Daniel in 1973. Cue fifty years of haunting, fucking a ghost, buried guilt, and desperately trying to manipulate your lover into thinking all of this is totally fine.

Summary
Daniel sees life like a river. Thinks he is caught up in a current that only goes one way, that will eventually sweep him out to sea. It’s easier for him to think so. It keeps him alive to think so.
He doesn’t know that he could stand up and reach the bottom. He doesn’t know he has a choice.
Drugs don’t work, sex doesn’t work, New York hasn’t worked. Somewhere in the Appalachian Mountains, an improbable number of suicides have taken place. Somewhere in a bar in New York, Daniel hears about them. He wants to fill a void. The difference between what is real and what isn’t matters as little to him as the things he’ll find to throw into the darkness. Which, as it turns out, is quite a lot.
