Summary
Robert had been so steady through it all. He’d pushed through the storm with unrelenting reserve, a steady point for Aaron to cling to when it felt like he was falling blindly, making sure they both made it through to the other side. He had done it again and again and again - he was still doing it now, since he was here in Aaron and John’s bed despite his own reservations, just because Aaron had asked him to.
But that had been a different Robert, the one that hadn’t been to prison yet. Prison changed people whether they wanted to or not, Robert included. He wasn’t as arrogantly confident anymore, even if it still shone through at times, having lost some of that ambitious drive that had been so alluring to Aaron in the beginning. The man who always had a plan, a solution to any problem, wasn’t there anymore, lost somewhere in the abyss that was the last six years.
Aaron asks Robert to stay for the first night at the Mill.

Aaron actually laughs at him. “Am I?”
“I’ve been shaggin’ the blushing bride for months,” Robert reveals, puffing out his chest as if to say I’m out and proud but by out he of course means out of that phase of his life where he thought he might be allowed to want something different to his Dad’s expectations of him.

“Is it?” Mackenzie asks, somewhat muffled as he sips from his wine glass.
“Ey?” Aaron frowns at him. “How can you listen to that whole story and think that’s even remotely true?”
Mackenzie blinks a couple of times as he places his glass on the table, and takes a deep breath before he starts speaking. “Okay, I am definitely not supposed to be drinking on my meds, so I am really drunk, and maybe I’m talking shite. But!” He raises a finger in the air. “Devil’s advocate. Speaking from Robert’s perspective, and bearing in mind that I only have the story you just told me to go off of… I can see where he’s coming from.”
Aaron talks it through.

“When?” he asks, incredulously. “When you were telling me to leave you alone so you could marry my brother? Or when you were telling me to leave you alone so you wouldn’t cheat on my brother? Or when you were telling me to leave you alone so you wouldn’t cheat on my brother, again? Or when you were telling me to leave you alone because I was right about my brother?”
“That’s not fair,” Aaron says, but he’s looking down at his feet now.
