    Summary

The horizon was no longer empty. A ship cut through the mist—massive and black, with its metal sides slick with frost. Smoke bellowed upward from its smokestack, an oily smear against the pale sky. The ship slowed as it approached, shadow falling long and dark across their fragile ice floe.

The engines hissed, then went quiet. Then a head popped over the rail. An older man with silver hair peered down at them, his face kind, as he called out, “Hey, you kids need some help?”

Or, one act of mercy leads to another, until a cold, forgotten village begins to feel alive again…and a lonely boy with a scar might just find a home.

    Summary

Zuko never chose exile. He never chose to be offered up as a living apology for a century of Fire Nation war. In the Southern Water Tribe, he is tolerated, tested, and hated in equal measure—an outsider meant to endure whatever anger the people still carry.
‎But survival in the ice does not allow distance. The hunts, the hunger, the grief—they bind him to those he was taught to despise. Especially her.

    Summary

Political unrest is rife in the Southern Water Tribe. Katara hopes that Fire Lord Zuko's visit during the Glacier Spirits' Festival will be fruitful, but she seriously doubts it. In the middle of celebrations, the Glacier Spirits themselves wreak havoc on Wolf Cove, and even Aang can't seem to calm them down.
On the far East side of the South, things aren't much better. A dreadful famine has set over the village of Glacier Combe, and the Chief's daughter Yanagi ventures into the barren ice floats at the first sign of spring.

Aang had never had siblings before. That wasn't really a *thing* for airbenders. But Katara made him promise to take her penguin sledding, and nine-year-old Sokka vowed he'd keep him safe like he did his sister.

So yeah. Aang had siblings now, and he'd protect them with his life.

    Summary

Zuko was abandoned by his father as a newborn and banished to the sea on an old wooden boat with little to no hope of surviving.
But as the waves grow and little zuko falls in, the sea stills and the spirits of Tui and La bless their newest child and bring him to the south pole where Zuko grows up as Kataras brother.

But as the war progesses and the Fire nation has nearly all the other nations and all benders captivated and under its iron fist rule, the ones that remain start whispering of a place mysteriously protected by spirits as more and more fire nation ships dissappear without a trace.

    Summary

This story follows them through the years, focusing on their healing after the war. Zuko never learned how to rest. Sokka never learned how to stop holding everyone else up.

    Snippet:
Zuko makes an expression like he’s about to plunge into ice water: “I visited my father again this evening,” he swallows hard, “If you ever see me turning into him I want you to…I want you to end me.”

    Everything tunnels in.

    “No.”

Zuko pauses, runs his hand through his hair, hard, like he’s trying to dig something out of his skull.

”I’m not... right. Not inside. The war’s over, and I thought I’d be at peace. But I’m not,” he squeezes his eyes shut, “Two years have passed. I sleep, and I see visions, fire. I see myself burning everything. Sometimes it’s Sozin’s dragon. Sometimes it’s…memories.”

Sokka watches him and it’s awful, because he recognizes himself, his own version of this. And he wants to fix it, he needs to fix it, needs to get that look out of Zuko’s eyes, but he’s not even sure where to start.

So he says the only thing that feels honest: “It’s okay. I get nightmares too.”

Sokka didn't trust this random Twelve (???) Year old. What type of freak appears in an iceberg and starts Airbending even though the Air Nomads were killed a century ago, he's weird and Sokka doesn't like weird.

Slight change; he REALLY doesn't like Aang after leading the Fire Nation RIGHT to his tribe.

    Summary

This story is an alternate continuation of my completed work We Can’t Choose Us.
Chapters 1–16 are exactly the same as in that version, so if you’ve already read them, you can start right here.
But if you’re new to the story, I recommend starting from the beginning for the full emotional context.
📖 You can read Chapters 1–16 here:
    https://archiveofourown.org/works/62580298/chapters/160180546

In this version, I changed one decision, and it led to a very different ending.
Because so many of you asked for it. Because so many of you believed they deserved more.
