* * *Shane is used to being told he’s impossible to buy a birthday present for. It’s not exactly fun to be reminded of this fact about himself year after year, but he’s come to accept that it’s probably his own fault. After all, what do you give a man who has zero interests outside hockey and keeps his cards close to his chest?
Turns out, his boyfriend might have a few ideas.

this is great not just for the emotions part (crying my heart out at all the gifts)
this is smart writing at its best
you saw the problem with "they have been together long before shanes bday, that cant be the first gift ilya gave him then y is shane doubting him?"
then you solved it cleverly with christmas and valentines being generic and capitalistic holidays, and bday is just one day where all the attention was on you, making it so much more personal and showing you who really cares!
just one of the better pieces of writing i'm lucky to stumble upon -
