    Summary

After the loss of his daughter, Arthur turns to reanimation in the hopes of bringing Faroe back from the dead. But when he brings his first John Doe to life as a test run, he realizes that what he has created is not a person—it’s a monster. Devastated, Arthur loses himself to his grief and allows John to flee into the night, sinking back into alcoholism under the care of his friend and partner, Parker. But when John reappears a few months later and kills Parker, just as Arthur is recovering from his crisis, he and Arthur become intertwined. John must discover what it means to be human in a world that offers both incredible kindness and incredible cruelty, and Arthur must come to terms with what he has done and whom he has created.

    Summary

After the deaths of his wife and daughter, a heartbroken Arthur Lester forsakes Earth for an opportunity aboard an intergalactic space station, populated by strange species from every corner of the galaxy. He answers an ad for an apartment for rent, and learns his would-be roommate “John Doe” [Name: Untranslatable into Human Speech] is a member of an alien species to which humans have a violent—and often fatal—visual reaction.

Arthur, blinded following the accident which left him widowed, decides to give the arrangement a go.

Yet as friendship kindles and they grow closer, Arthur learns that John’s past, as full of secrets as John himself, harbors not only terrifying mysteries of old gods, but a growing threat. One which will force both John and Arthur to the edge of known space, and back to the shores of the Lake of Hali, to face a darkness which threatens all of Carcosa.

    Summary

Home feels temporary, a sandcastle seconds from washing away in the rising tide. Home is a fairy tale he used to tell Faroe, a lie he told himself, his own carrot, as false and hollow as Kayne’s. Maybe Arthur is a shark, unable to stop, leaving a trail of blood wherever he goes.

A character exploration of Arthur's relationship to the concept of home, spanning from childhood to post-canon.
