"Killing soldiers," Laurence said at last, "most of whom are starving; and making them vicious, so they give us still-better excuse."
“Rules of Engagement” was inspired by consumptive_sphinx's fic “l'chaim," which features a Jewish Augustine Little. I thought the brutal campaign against the French irregulars would be a good time for Little and Granby to become, er, more engaged. What was I thinking.

Summary
Rereading His Majesty’s Dragon is a notable experience in many ways, not least of which is the abundance of skin on display when Laurence and Temeraire arrive at Loch Laggan. Before Granby realizes who Laurence is and they get off on the wrong foot, Laurence declares himself to be on Team Granby, at least as far as balls are concerned.
Therefore, I amused myself by writing the Lt. Dayes-free version of Laurence & Granby: The Early Days, trying to keep as much of the original story as possible, using italics to indicate Novik's text. The italics are used in Chapter 1 and Chapter 4; Chapters 2 and 3 are my contribution, i.e. the smut.

Captured by the French while trying to rescue Temeraire and Iskierka's egg, Tharkay is separated from Laurence and Granby. Laurence surprises Tharkay on multiple occasions, but not nearly enough. League of Dragons from Tharkay's point of view until he drops out of the story for 175 pages (!), then a flurry of alternating point of view chapters until we rejoin the last page of the novel with a happy ending already in progress.
