These days, hockey mostly feels like a freshly healed scar to Mike. He can run his fingers over the surface of the shiny, dark flesh in his mind, see the shape of where it tore into him, but unless he really stabs at it, digs in with his nails, it doesn’t bleed or hurt anymore. Not like it used to.
All the relationships he lost when he walked away from (was forced out of) hockey, the people who dropped out of his life overnight when shit got tough—those, too, are scars, spiderwebbing out from the initial bullet wound.
