As a librarian, Karen Page knows better than to judge a book by its cover, but sometimes nerves and her gut instinct get the best of her.
Maybe that’s why she finds it so hard to accept help when it’s offered by a quiet, bearded and slightly brooding Frank Castle.

A lanyard stuck out just below where her shirt fell, listing a name in all-caps black lettering: Claire Temple.
“Is this what you do? Nurse street villains to health?”
“You mean stitch up vigilantes who have a knack for dumpster diving?” She sighed, shaking her head and looking up at the sky like she was questioning her entire existence. “It’s not exactly my day job. Apparently, I’m enough of a sucker to want to help, even if it means housing people who’ve almost put me in a grave once or twice.”
“Sounds dangerous.”
“Nothing like what you do.”

“Clint?”
Bucky flung the door open and raced out to meet him, reappearing in the doorway with his arm looped around Clint’s shoulders. The way Clint leaned into his chest, how uneven his steps were, twisted Darcy’s stomach.
She could only catch the tail-end of their conversation as Bucky murmured, “You should have let us bring you home.”
“I’m fine,” Clint groused, just loud enough for her to hear.
But Darcy didn’t miss that something wasn’t right — with his head down, not even acknowledging Bucky’s attempt at conversation. Clint’s red-wrung eyes met hers, that guilt peeking through, and she knew what he was about to say before the words had even left his lips.
“My aids are… shot…” he spat out, eyes darting away from Darcy’s gaze, ashamed. “I can’t hear you. Stark doesn’t know when the replacements will be ready.”

Matt?”
The familiar voice called out at the creak of hardwood under foot by the door to the roof.
“Matt, is that you?”
There was more concern in their tone now, heart picking up its pace inside their chest. It probably didn’t help that it was the middle of the night and Matt Murdock was still working up the courage to say something. Not like he was trying to slip in undetected. In fact, he was mostly curious about who was in the apartment he’d assumed was vacant.
Thought it didn’t take him long to piece it together— it didn’t take her long to draw him in.

“No, I—” he struggled for the words that wouldn’t give him away too.
Wouldn’t give away the fact that he was already revelling in the pieces of her left behind in every corner of his apartment— her scent on the sheets, her sweater on the couch, the unfamiliar take-out containers on the counter.
Whatever he was feeling, it felt right.

Summary
Bucky Barnes had a knack for faces. Always had.
Even back when he was in the Army out in the desert with fifty pounds of gear on and sand blowing in his face, he always knew exactly who was under the helmet. Knew them by name. Sometimes by stance.
The morning rush always came with new faces to catalogue and orders to memorize until Bucky, co-owner of Barnes & Wilson cafe, could recognize the regulars by the time the overhead bell rang.
But not this morning.
This time when the bell rang, Barnes came up short, not recognizing the flash of red hair, curled and slightly frizzy from the summer heat.

“So, Doctor Darcy Lewis, huh?”
“Yep,” she confirmed, popping the ‘p.’ “Have the big expensive piece of paper to prove it and everything.”
Most people would stop there, would spout a little ‘good for you’ or ‘that’s impressive’ or even just a ‘wow.’ But Clint Barton was not most people, not standing there on the dark on the roof of the newly rebuilt Avengers Compound. Not at 2 AM. Probably not ever.
She knew enough about him to know that.
“Well, Doc,” Clint all but crooned. “Y’look good.”

“Yes, because your half-assed compliments are exactly what I’m here for,” Darcy said, pushing back the flush that would have given her inner impulses away— that traitorous line of thought she was sure she’d left in that desert in New Mexico.
And then there was the London hotel room after that.
Oh, and Brooklyn…
Clint’s eyes flashed to hers, wide and hopeful, the latter snuffed out an instant later as those big blues locked themselves to the ground below. He scuffed the toe of his sneaker, “S’good to see you, is all.”
Something about that look still tugged at her heartstrings, reminded her of the good times they shared— the stupid nights trading tales over a bartop, two shots too deep to translate any of the niche science nonsense into layman’s terms for Clint.
He could usually read between the lines.
“I’m just pulling your chain, you mopey bastard,” Darcy admitted a little too quickly, guilt settling in at his expression. But she didn’t have the time to ask herself why. “You don’t look so bad yourself.”

It feels almost normal for a moment, just sitting side by side, Paul’s hand on her knee. His fingers pick at the inseam of her jeans out of habit, mostly, but it still sends a small jolt through her skin. They’d been interrupted by the cop earlier; her skin goes hot at the memory, like her body’s taking all her adrenaline and redirecting it with a single-minded focus.

Summary
Between missions and meetings, there were almost average nights for Wanda and James— sometimes.
But there were other types of nights, too.
Nights like these, when they couldn’t close the door fast enough behind them. When the only thing keeping her upright was one firm hand on her ass and a string of filthy praises in her ear.

Closing her fingers in a fist, Wanda gave his hair a tug, lips curving at James’s groan as his back arched into her hold. That knot in her belly tightened as his breath hitched. And she watched intently as his blue eyes rolled to the back of his skull.
Undone. James had come completely undone for her, and Wanda just couldn’t get enough.
She could remember the first time she’d done it, trying to help him navigate, nudging him towards the right spot. She could remember how tentative she’d been. She could remember the wonton moan that left James’ lips, the way his eyes fluttered shut. The way his whole face softened in pleasure.
These days, Wanda was a little more forceful.

Bucky, for his part, kept to the back of the pack, happy to keep his eyes on the both of them. It was enough to watch them sneak glances across the room all night, playful brushes out of sight, whispers played off like friendly banter. But tonight was more. A lot more.
It had been negotiating far away from the prying eyes and ears of the spies and super soldiers. In hushed tones in early morning hours, on floors they barely had access to.
All to say, this had been on the books for a while.

Summary
He stares at her back as she works over the sink. Watches as she hums quietly to herself like there isn't a strange man behind her bleeding out on her living room couch. Like she has strange men bleed out on her living room couch every day.
“Look, um. Claire, right? Okay. Don’t take this the wrong way, Claire, but you found a man bleeding to death in the trash and your first instinct wasn't to call 911?”

Bookmarker's Notes
It's clear from the way she moves - quick and efficient but never hasty - that being gentle is not a part of their deal. And true to form, as Clint watches, she unceremoniously dumps a bottle of something that smells terrible over one of the gashes on the man’s stomach and he winces, jerks back in his seat with a sharp hiss. She tightens her hold on his leg, while her other hand grasps his forearm and pins him in place. The man stills immediately. Relaxes. The smirk comes back, warmer this time.
It's clear as day: they've done this a million times before. Clint bites down on about twelve more questions. He's not sure he wants to know.

"Please?" he tried, the closest he'd get to pleading as he tried to meet her lips.
Claire huffed a chuckle, tracing his cheekbone with her thumb as she leaned over him. He was dying to reach out and touch her, to trace his fingertips across the goosebumped skin and lace bra she'd brought out for the night.
But there were rules.
"After that little stunt you pulled last night?" Claire murmured in a warning tone. "You're lucky I'm letting you get off at all."

But there was more to it than that. More than the pleasure and the sensations and the sexy one-liners. This game of theirs wasn’t just limited to late nights and bad decisions— Claire was the only one he trusted to be in control when he didn’t want to be— when he couldn’t be.
The only one who seemed to be able to bring him right down to size in the way he really craved.

That roar seemed to echo off of every surface, the guttural bellow rattling every bone in his body. All Frank could see was pure red.
“Is that all it takes to shake the great Frank Castle? And here we thought you’d been neutralized. Guess it was neutered instead.”
Maybe Frank should have taken that as an insult— a lesser man might— but Frank was too busy seething over Karen’s motionless body across the room, hoping for any sign of life. Wouldn’t even give him the privileged of looking him in the eye.
This scum didn’t deserve it.
“You shouldn’t’ve fucking touched her,” Frank growled.

“You’re going to get down, closer to the ground very slowly, OK? You wanna end up on your belly.”
Karen gave a jerky nod, trying to regulate her breathing towards something further from a near-panic attack. Frank showed her how, dropping down himself so he could edge himself close to the ice. Closer to her. If only he could get into arms’ reach…
“OK. OK,” Karen whispered to herself. “I can do this.”
“That’s right, sweetheart, you’ve got this,” Frank added, throat tight and eyes darting in every which way, trying to anticipate the break. “That’s right, nice and easy.”

Frank hummed, that low, raspy tone that made fire run through her veins, “Just the tree, huh?”
They both knew this joint was way too far out of town to be her regular. Too many hours spent on the road, looking for the right lot. He wondered who tipped her off but knew it was fruitless to ask. A journalist never revealed their sources, after all.
“And maybe I wanted to say hi,” Karen said a little lower now. “And that I missed you.”
She didn’t know what to expect in the way of a reaction, watching as Frank shifted his weight from foot to foot. Wrestling with himself.
