Summary

I was not expecting this, or whoever you are, but—”
The door clicks open, and then a different voice, one that was surely Xiao’s, cuts him off effectively.
“Ajax? But I thought you were— Brother?”
He should’ve stayed out in the rain.

Zhongli only looks back at Childe. Flashes of red flicker from the small cracks of their wooden shed, painting the benched polearms, bows, claymores and swords in a bright crimson. It colors Childe’s auburn hair a bloody red, from the tip of his head to the battered silver of his clothes.
Only a stare looks back at him. Dead eyes are flooded with the occasional streaks of red, hollow and anticipating. Zhongli pretends that they are anything but. He doesn’t want to know what else lies behind the coated blue. Not anymore.
Not when he could lose them.
It is totally normal to talk about love with your kinda-enemy-but-not-anymore-since-there's-a-third-more-evil-party-now-and-you-might-even-have-a-crush-on-said-enemy. Especially in the midst of chaos and ruin. Totally.

Childe looks up from where he’s skinning a fish, surprised to see Xiao looking out of place amongst the snow, and severely underdressed. “What are you doing here?”
Xiao, abrupt as ever, takes a step forward. “Morax is rising to mate.”
“Don’t be ridiculous.” Childe tosses the excess into the bucket and rests the best parts of the fish onto the pile. He stinks, needs a shower, and he’s absolutely not considering what Xiao is saying. “Zhongli retired as Queen Rider. HIs dragon shouldn’t be mating any other dragon.”
Unless it was his.
“He did,” Xiao agrees, turning his nose up as he gets closer to the table, and the smell of fish. “Your precious Tsaritsa decided to renege and is threatening to instil Signora at Liyue.”

Summary
Worried that her youngest underboss might be indulging a bit too much in the beguiling illegal drugs that the Fatui have to offer, the Tsaritsa assigns him to become the bodyguard of the mysterious mine owner, Zhongli, under a pact of mutual assistance.
There is more to their relationship than either of them might have anticipated.
For a frightening moment, Zhongli seemed to hesitate — and as Childe gave him an urgent, non-too-gentle shove towards the porch, blurry silhouettes melted away from the dark in the corner of his vision.
Zhongli’s palms crashed against the stained glass panels in the door. “Childe—”
“Lock the door. Don’t go up alone,” Childe snapped across his shoulder, not bringing himself to care much for manners. “Stay there, you hear me?”
He had no time to reason, no time to prepare as every one of his muscles sprang to action. If they wanted Zhongli — they would have to get him over Childe’s cold, dead body.Reworking and slow to update, sorry!
