Les laughs. “But Davey can’t swim.”
Jack’s eyes widen and he looks at David, clearly fighting back laughter. “You can’t swim?”
David shakes his head and he feels his face growing warm. “No.”
“Don’t worry Dave, I’ll teach you.” Jack offers, obviously finding the entire thing much more amusing than David does.

David had foolishly believed that Jack had forgotten about Santa Fe. That he would stay. That David was enough for him to stay. He was wrong.
It had been months since the end of the strike. Christmas had came and went, and David really thought Jack had been happy. He had came around for the holidays, celebrated with them even. Perhaps David should have seen it, that look in Jack’s eyes when they all celebrated, that far off look.
