“He’s a river dragon,” Yu Ziyuan replied sharply, and reached into the crib.
“Mama?” said Jiang Yanli, in a quavering voice.
“Don’t be a silly goose, A-Li,” said Yu Ziyuan, in the brisk matter-of-fact tone that she had perfected over years of supervising night hunts and hosting Discussion Conferences. She hoisted the squirming dragonet into her arms, and it – he – stopped growling, grinned happily (it was a very wide grin, now, revealing two rows of alarmingly sharp silver teeth) and reached for his Jiejie with all his little claws. “Nothing terrible happened to A-Cheng, he’s just transformed, see?”
Jiang Cheng, the first dragon to appear in Yunmeng for many generations, is sent to Cloud Recesses. He is raised by Lan Qiren, alongside Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji (who are also dragons).

When Jiang Cheng arrives at the Cloud Recesses expecting to break through his cultivation. He doesn't expect to find a friend, let alone fall in love.
“Where are they going?” Jiang Cheng asks his mother.
“They are participating in the Cloud Recesses lectures held by the Lan sect to improve their cultivation.” Yu Ziyuan explains.
Jiang Cheng furrows his brow. “Why?”
Yu Ziyuan pulls Jiang Cheng close, running a comb through his hair and neatly braiding his hair back so they don’t impede his swimming. “As jiaoren, we are impeded by our mortal forms. These lectures are not only a time for our disciples to make important connections with other sect members, but also a chance for them to become stronger cultivators and learn to make breakthroughs past the deficiencies of our jiaoren bodies.”
Jiang Cheng mulls on this, still not quite grasping his mother’s meaning, before asking. “Will I ever go?”
Yu Ziyuan barks out a laugh, the one she makes every time Jiang Cheng asks a silly question. “Of course you will. You are our heir, and when you are old enough to attend, I expect nothing but diligence from you.”

In the aftermath of a night hunt, Jiang Cheng gets trapped in a cave with Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian, acquiring a mind-reading ability as part of a curse that drains his spiritual energy to leave him vulnerable to the elements. Dual cultivation is out of the question for him... or is it? Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji certainly have a difference of opinion.
‘What man has such plump tits? Ridiculous. Such a rich brown too… as if it were stained with brown sugar syrup.’ The words are disjointed, but one thing is for certain. That is Lan Wangji’s voice.
Jiang Cheng’s eyes snap to the man, but Lan Wangji’s lips aren’t moving, although the man does seem to be glaring toward the vicinity of his chest.

Wei Wuxian slunk closer, dropping his pile of papers right on top of Jiang Cheng's notes and slouching onto the travel trunk stored beside the desk. He crossed his arms on top of the pile and propped his chin on them, turning his face sideways to look up at Jiang Cheng. "I helped," he said. His eyes glittered, red-rimmed and over-bright, and his skin had the gray tinge of exhaustion. This close, he stunk of the strange resentful energy his new cultivation style utilized. His hands were clean-- at least he'd had the courtesy to wash off the grave dirt before coming-- but his fingernails were chewed to the quick. Jiang Cheng's lips pressed together, half-concern, half-disapproval.
"They weren't supposed to be done for another shichen," he said, instead of when is the last time you slept or have you eaten anything in the last two days or any of the hundred other things he wanted to say. Wei Wuxian didn't mind being mothered when Jiang Yanli did it. If Jiang Cheng tried, he'd just tell him to fuck off. He continued, "It doesn't count as helping if you do one thing and leave."
