Summary
Eddie was already regretting agreeing to this, but Buck had to be Buck. Persuasive dimples Buck.
‘It’ll be good for you to take your head off the situation’ Buck.
‘The whole fam will be there’ Buck.
‘I swear we’ll have fun’ Buck.
‘I’ll never leave your side’ Buck.
He was still in the car, hoping from a cleaver excuse to come to him. Or maybe an unfortunate, unexpected, not-super-alarming emergency, to a not-super-close family member.
He sighed. The noise of drunk twenty-something-year-olds laughing, clicking their heals on the ground while teetering because intoxicated.
The smell of hairspray, aftershave, cologne and cheap vodka filling the street, and unfortunately, his nostrils.Or: Buck invites Eddie to go clubbing and they discover new things about themselves.

Chris gave him a mischievous and excited smirk of approval. His dad slid the key in the keyhole and tried to open the door as quietly as possible.
It was still early in the morning and he was sure that his best friend was still asleep.
He approached his former bedroom with catlike steps and cautiously placed a hand on the doorknob.
As he was about to walk in, he was surprised by odd whimpers coming from the other side of the door.
Was Buck sick?
A worried frown started forming in between his eyebrows as he barged into the room.—

Summary
“We just don’t see a lot of your kind around here” said the son.
“My kind? What is that supposed to mean” asked the new hire giving him a confused smile.
“You know… pretty boys” answered the other.
“You’re pretty handsome yourself” said Buck.
“I didn’t say handsome, did I?”
Rude.
“Well, you’ll definitely see more of me, so get used to it” sassed the pretty boy.
“Let’s see how long you’ll last”—
Or: Buck had just finished the Navy Seals training and was left disappointed and kind of lost. He needed a fresh start. He found himself in El Paso and got hired to work on the Diaz’ family ranch. -

“May, baby, can you please bring Buck his dish back?” Asked Athena.
Since Bobby died, Buck made sure that the Grant family was well taken care of.
“And tell him that I’m old enough to be his mother, I don’t need a babysitter” she glanced at the empty glass dish “Nor a cook.”
“Okay mom, should I just bring it to the firehouse? I’m about to see Ravi” replied May.
“It’s his day off, just bring it to his house on your way there, thank you” Athena ended the conversation.
Her daughter grabbed her car keys, the glass dish and headed to the door.—
Or: Buck overdoses and May finds him.

Summary
“They asked us to share something interesting about our families.”
“And you—” Eddie stops, presses his lips together, then flicks a hand toward him. “You went with my imaginary engagement.”
Christopher finally puts his phone away. “I didn’t say you were engaged.”
“You told everyone I have a firefighter boyfriend.”
“Yeah.”
Eddie lifts a hand. “Which firefighter?”
Christopher gives him a look.
Eddie waits.
The look continues.
He lets his hand fall. “Christopher.”
“Who do you think?”
“I’m asking you.”
Christopher shifts one crutch against the wall and gestures vaguely at Eddie, like the answer should be somewhere on his person. “Buck.”
Or Chris tells his science club that Buck and Eddie are basically married

Summary
His mom clears her throat, squinting her eyes at Eddie. “Whose is he? Do you—Do you have a new girlfriend?”
Theo giggles and looks up at her from below. “Eddie doesn’t have a girlfriend! That’s silly!”
Eddie nearly chokes. Silly… Yeah, maybe so. “Uh—No. No girlfriend.”
“Then whose is he, Eddie?” His dad asks.
And with the comedic timing of one of those corny 90s sitcoms, Buck chooses that exact moment to walk out of the kitchen.
Or: Eddie's parents make a surprise visit for Christopher's sixteenth birthday. What they didn't expect was finding a few surprises of their own.
Or: Eddie is convinced the universe hates him when his parents come to visit. With them already believing he and Buck are together, Eddie decides to roll with it.

Summary
"Where were you last night, Mateo?"
Huh? Eddie head spins around, looking for Buck's apparently dastardly lover that he's just hearing of now, only to be greeted by unperturbed shoppers who continue to push their carts down the hallway.
His eyes snap back to Buck and he leans over the countertop. "Who the hell is Mateo?"
"Don't play dumb with me! I heard you come home at three o'clock in the morning, stumbling through the hallway," says Buck with narrowed eyes and a smirk on his face.
"What on earth is happening right now."
"Just play along!" Buck whispers back, grinning wide.
Eddie's brow furrows before the pieces click together. Buck's messing with him, playing house. An apparently very dysfunctional one at that. All without Eddie's signature on the metaphorical deed.
Eddie's mouth turns up into a smile against his will. Overwhelmed with fondness for his idiot best friend. He stands up—chest puffing.
"I was working. Putting food on the table. Is that a problem?"
Buck and Eddie fake a fight in an IKEA kitchen display for fun. It gets realer then they both ever intended.

And that should be it - if there’s no girlfriend, then there’s no need to even think about getting married again. Or there shouldn’t be a need. Somehow there still is. Somehow Eddie finds himself standing in his kitchen, hands gripping the countertop behind his back looking across the room into eyes he could pick from a line up not even trying to stop the words coming from his mouth.

Summary
And, here, looking at his best friend, he can see that something’s broken inside him, too. And, maybe it’s the therapy he’s had over the years, his sessions with Frank, but Eddie wants to talk to Buck. He wants Buck to talk to him. Buck, who just looks so fucking sad, still in his dress blues, one hand drinking the beer, the other coming up to loosen his tie.
This morning, Eddie had noticed Buck tying, untying, retying the tie with breaths of frustration, fingers shaking. “Eddie,” he’d said lowly from across the room, and Eddie wouldn’t have even heard him if he hadn’t been watching. “I, uh, can never – I can never get this right.”
