The house on Rue des Érables had a particular smell in winter.
It was the smell of coffee perpetually brewing, of hockey tape and rubber and the faint cedar of Ilya's cologne, of ballet rosin that Irina tracked in on her shoes without noticing, of whatever expensive perfume Rosalie had decided was her signature that month. It was the smell of protein powder mixed into everything because Shane Hollander had been retired for four years and still could not let go of his macros. It was the smell of old hardwood and good candles and something underneath all of it that was harder to name — something like warmth that had been accumulating in the walls for over a decade, banked there like heat in a stone fireplace, so that even when the Montreal winters pressed cold against the windows, the inside of the house stayed soft.
