Summary
No one was afforded the time to mourn Isao Shinomiya's death.
It made little difference to Hoshina. He never knew the man all that well. He was a respectable fighter, and a damned good leader, but he was never someone Hoshina would consider close. So, the funeral happened, and the world kept turning. Things went mostly back to normal, and Hoshina all but forgot about the grieving.
And then he got a phone call from Kikoru Shinomiya at ass-o'-clock in the morning.
"I can't find Captain Narumi."

“What the hell part of ‘time off’ do ya not understand?” Hoshina hisses, glowering down at him. He shoves his boot between Narumi’s shoulder blades and pins him down to the floor. That’s the right thing to do, because it makes Narumi quit it.
It’s the wrong thing to do, because it makes Narumi’s neck turn bright red.
“It’s just maintenance,” Narumi mutters, and he lets out a choked, shy little cough.
Hoshina blushes too as he quickly steps off. Hoshina pops down on the floor, sitting next to Narumi as Narumi rolls over onto his back. Hoshina rolls his paper copy of the meeting minutes up into a small stick, and he bops Narumi on the temple with ‘em.
“Well quit maintaining, ya dope.”

A picture of them goes viral on Twitter.
At first glance the photo is nothing worth flagellating over. If it was taken ten seconds earlier it would’ve featured a pretty steamy kiss, but as things are it’s just a picture of Hoshina, his back to the camera, carefully draping his coat over Narumi’s shoulders.
That’s not the problem. The problem is Narumi’s face: completely, utterly, 100% whipped. Hopelessly besotted. Genuinely embarrassing to look at.
The PR department is a little irked. Narumi is a little irked too, albeit for very different reasons.
“If -we- went viral, then why the hell is #hoshiro trending on Twitter?”

This drabble is an ode to Kaiju No.8 B-Side, and the fact that not knowing about it often leads to a bit of a mischaracterisation of Narumi: the slacker prodigy persona is something of an act! Seriously, go read B-Side! It’s awesome! Narumi is amazing in it!

It’s half past two in the morning.
Narumi puts the barbell back on the rack and chugs down what’s left in his water bottle. Sweat is dripping from his brow as he wipes his mouth with the back of his wrist. His hands shake a little from exertion, which is always a good sign.
The gym is deafeningly quiet when he drops to the ground to do a round of post-workout stretches. Everyone except for on-duty guards is dead asleep, which suits Narumi just fine; there’s no risk he’s gonna get exposed during his illicit late-night affairs.
He stretches slowly and methodically, paying equal attention to each muscle group. He can’t risk an avoidable injury, and he went hard tonight.
He always goes hard.

The words blurred and sharpened as his mind ran circles around them. Complications? What did that mean? Injuries? An ambush? A Kaiju too strong even for Gen? His thumbs hovered over the screen, unsure of how to respond. He wanted to call, demand more details, but his chest had gone tight the second he read the vice captain’s message.

“I’ll be a distant memory one day,” Narumi’s voice slurs with his intoxication, pitching unusually as he waved his cup of sake in the air — gesturing at nothing while he rambles.
“Is that so?” Soushirou hums noncommittally, laughing when the dual tone man glares at him as if his response to… whatever this is matters.
Narumi Gen is the captain of the First Division, the JAKDF’s strongest anti-kaiju combatant, the first and so far only user of Numbers Weapon One. He is not and will not be one forgotten by history, and, whenever he isn’t drunk out of his mind at a mandatory ball none of them want to be at, he seems to know that damn well. He practically never stops talking about how strong he is, and Soushirou has to say that he rather prefers the honest ego to this facsimile of humility. Here stands a monster dressed in flushed human skin, claiming that he, of all the faceless soldiers he leads and even more faceless civilians he protects, will leave no record behind. It’s utterly preposterous, and Soushirou nearly chips a molar with how hard he grinds his teeth.
Or; Hoshina and Narumi's first conversation was not when Narumi tried to recruit him, but long before that.
