Summary
After returning from the Unknown, Wirt and Greg's lives were anything but normal, and their time spent in that land between life and death had permanently changed them. For one, the boys had begun to see ghosts in their own world, harmless spirits passing through. Even more weird, Wirt seems to now have an effect on the weather around him, able to cause localized storms if he is in a very happy or very sour mood. The last, which Wirt has not even told Greg about yet- has been unintentional visits to what seems to be the Unknown, which he experiences when he is sleeping. Nevertheless, the boys find a way to live with these changes, up until the 13th anniverary of their trip over the garden wall. Something dark and sinister is coming to disrupt the fragile peace Wirt and Greg have built for themselves, and it is up to an unexpected visitor to help them solve this newest mystery.

Summary
Snufkin returns to Moominvalley, but some things have changed. Following an accident which took place while he was away, Moomin has become thoughtful and distant. It isn't until Snufkin is about to leave the following year - and is prevented from doing so by a sudden, persistent illness, meaning he must spend winter with Moomin for the first time - that he learns the full story and comes to understand how best to help his friend.
In the meantime, Snufkin realizes his own feelings have begun to change, and must decide whether his fear of losing freedom will prevent him from accepting a place in the hearts of those who care for him most.
