Henry takes his tea from Alex and sits at his desk. There’s edits to be made, manuscripts to be looked over, but for once in his life, that's the least of his concerns right now.
“To put it simply,” he says, “we won’t.”
When Henry Fox, Head Editor of Windsor Publishing, is threatened with deportation, he makes a desperate attempt to stay in the country by faking a relationship with his executive assistant, Alex Claremont-Diaz. But when they’re forced to travel to Alex’s hometown to keep up their charade, real feeling start to spill over, and both are left wondering what they really want for each other.

Henry was fully aware of what he was getting himself into.

Henry’s face, smushed into the bend of his arm, stays alarmingly still.
“Excuse me.”
The beer bottle on Alex’s stomach begins to wobble, and Alex only narrowly catches it before it dumps over on his chest. He rolls over and leans on one of his arms.
“I mean. That’s what friends are for, right?”
Silence stretches over the living room, Henry’s face hovering above him from the couch. Alex stares at the rug until he can’t avoid Henry’s gaze anymore, then blinks up at him slowly.
“Right,” Henry echoes eventually.

"You don't look too bad yourself," he says back.

He’s not upset when Alex makes the mistake of bringing up Nathan over dinner, emboldened by the wine and still a little bitter about how he’d treated Henry at the Christmas party. It makes Henry pause the fork on its way to his mouth, like he’s surprised Alex had even noticed.
“It wouldn’t do either of us any good to be upset about that,” Henry tells him bluntly. “He’s hardly touched me in two years since he began fucking the landscaper. Would you care for dessert?”
Alex wipes his mouth with his napkin and leans back in his chair, his blood simmering again.
“Rather get the check, I think.”
Henry says “Very well,” with all of the elegance of someone they both know is about to be thoroughly taken apart, pays the bill, and leads Alex up to his hotel room.

The next morning, Alex told his parents goodbye and Henry drove him to the airport, both of them sleep-deprived and solemn. Henry hugged him in the shadow of the Delta help desk and kissed Alex’s lips like Alex was his fucking oxygen, the only thing keeping him breathing. Alex was still hoping, reeling as he stared down the path in front of him that didn’t include Henry.
It didn’t feel right, pressing his mouth to Henry’s and wondering if it might be the last time.
Even on the other side of security, with his bag slung over his shoulder, Alex looked back.
Henry was walking away, toward the giant glass doors, his head hung and his hands in his pockets. Alex watched him go, letting the tears fall from his eyes as Henry disappeared. His heart ripped from his chest as he took the most painful breath he’s ever taken in his life, because Henry was Alex’s oxygen, the only thing keeping him breathing.
But Henry let him go.
Henry didn’t ask him to stay.
So Alex left.
